SVT-40 gas valve

I recently bought a SVT-40 and haven't shot it yet. To night while stripping it down and cleaning the cosmo off of it I took the gas valve apart, and am not sure how to adjust it now. I noticed there's is a mark on the gun and a mark on the valve nut. I assumed that you line these to marks up for each setting. But I noticed that when I do this the vent hole on the valve nut and the vent hole on the gun don't line up. So whats the right way to do it, line the marks up or the holes up?

Line the mark up, and you will be fine. Mine is set at the 1.5 mark and i found it perfectly reliable on all condition with military ammo.

Which mark is the least gas? I may as well start low and work up...
