Hi

My buddy is coming over today to help him clean his SVT-40 after a session of corrosive ammo. Will a gas system need to be cleaned as well as the bore?

Also his receiver cover can be moved forward when the rifle is assembled.(albeit under the recoil spring tension) Is this supposed to be happening? Or is the receiver cover held by something.

What purpose does the door in the back of the receiver serve?

Any other tips are appreciated.

Paul

The receiver cover is supposed to move with the rifle assembled - that's actually how its disassembled. The gas system will need to be cleaned - hopefully someone else can advise how, I find my SVT-40 to be a real bear to disassemble so I only use non-corrosive stuff in it. As near as I can figure out, the door in the receiver is actually a cleaning rod guide - it you look, it lines up with the bore.

If by "door" you mean the little serrated tear-drop-shaped cover at the very rear of the receiver, that's part of the latching mechanism for the trigger-guard; you turn it all the way to the left, then press in on the little movable collar inside to release the rear of the trigger-guard, then you can pivot it down and out of the rifle.
You should definitely try to clean out the gas system with Windex if you can (luckily, it's mainly at the muzzle end), but a complete strip-down can be a real PITA.
