SVT-40 - maintenance requirements?

I've read many positive comments about the SVT-40. All seem to be conditional, based upon "proper" maintenance. Apparently, Russian troops did not favour this gun, while Finns and Germans did. I'd really appreciate hearing from some one experienced with this gun, exactly what sort of a maintenance routine should one undertake with the SVT-40? Apart from regular, basic cleaning, does it have specific requirements: set-up, gas valve adjustments, modifications, etc?

Compared to other semi-auto military rifles, should the SVT-40 be considered a "high maintenance" gun? In terms of its accuracy, reliability and maintenance requirements, how does the SVT-40 compare to the M14 (if that's a fair comparison)?

Thanks in advance, for your time!

well it all depends on if you shoot surplus corrosive ammo or not , if your just shooting new ammo or reloads just treat it like any other semiauto it will work fine i find 1.3 gas setting is the best overall . if you shoot corrosive ammo you must clean it after every use, fully strip the rifle there are some how to field strip vids on youtube and use windex, soapy water, hoppes9, ect. to clean the corrosive salts of the parts and barrel make shure you unscrew the gas piston and clean it too .

Thanks. Any thoughts on ammo choices; the Yugo SP surplus, the Brown Bear Russian commercial, etc???

Do you have an optic on your 40? Any thoughts on mounts?

well i shoot corrosive Czech military surplus ammo but there is not any around anymore really i stockpiled lots when you could get it . i have never seen yugo ammo here in canada before and there is no Russian ammo in canada....... it was not approved by NARCAN cant get Wolf ,Brown Bear, or Russian surplus it sucks . if you cant find Czech surplus your stuck with commercial stuff like PriviPartizan , S&B ect, its about $1 a round or reloads is a good option . i dont have optics on mine but you can get a scope mount from Frontier Firearms if your SVT has the scope mount groves some dont ..

Speaking optic, i think the side mount designed for the sks that interammo sell could work well on a svt 40, along with a posp scope. That mount seem 1 of the best choice to me. Please correct me if i'm wrong:)

Is the SVT-40 drilled and tapped for a scope mount? I read somewhere that it has grooves in the side of the receiver, but is it fully prepped or does the mount require some work? Also, was there a mount originally designed for the gun?

Thanks

No,the svt is not drilled for scope mount. The sks mount i was talking in my earlier post require 2 holes drilled and a bit off wood removed. Interammo should supply exact infos about that possible mounting system. The svt built before 1942 have the receiver grooved for the original military mount. But the military mount require a notch on the top off receiver and only ex-svt sniper have that notch. P&S militaria have some ex sniper but no mount or scopes. I think repro mount and scope can be found but i dont know were exactly. P&S Militaria carry an aftermarket mount for the svt with grooved receiver. The mount has weaver rail so you can mount many types of optics but i dont know if those mount work well, maybe you can ask members here that try the mount so you will know if they are good or not. Its all the info i have for now, hope will help you:)

Please, please dont drill and tap an SVT. I BELIEVE there are "no gunsmith" mounts around, if not please find another (non milsurp) rifle. Please don't bubba an SVT.

GLOBE Bubba'd a RAFT of them, all Finn captures, too!

I know, I know......

Time to go for a cry.

At least I got the last Finn capture they had.... and it's not Bubba'd.

Not that anyone here would ever bubba one . But why not?? there seems to be a boat load of them around :nest:

At one point in time there were a lot of nice original No4s aswell...then bubba destroyed them. Nice original ones are still around, but they are getting less and less common as compared to bubbas.
