I received my scope mount for my SVT-40 today. My rifle already had the slots in it, so I purchased the model that does not require machining or gunsmithing to install. Price was approx. $150, give or take. I ordered it online from EBay.
First off, shipping was unbelievable. I think I had it in two days. Packaging was top-notch. The mount was in bubble-wrap, while the other components were in their own plastic ziploc-style bags. Very professional.
My initial impressions: quality machining. Everything was even, symmetrical and neat. Threads were all good, and a standard scope mounts to the picatinny rail. The scope mount I purchased had the holes tapped in the side if you also wanted to install side rails for a flashlight, red-dot, surface-to-air-missile, etc. When you order the mount you can request these rails (at extra cost). I didn't want them.
I was impressed with a few little things - the instructions were very clear, including email and telephone contact information for any questions. As well, the included allen wrench and a small bottle of loctite are a classy thing, as some kits don't include that.
Install took all of 5 minutes. My scope mount slid right on. The instructions say if it's stiff to tap it with a rubber mallet, which I did to be sure, but it was already on as far forward as it would go. I installed all six screws/pins to hold it in place and then tightened them up. The kit also includes an adhesive foam pad if you have a massive sniper scope, to stick on the bottom of the scope to prevent damage from errant ejected cases. It also looks like it won't interfere with removal of the buffer spring cover (sp) for cleaning & maintenance. That will be another test for down the road, since I just finished stripping & cleaning my rifle the day before.
Indeed, as the instructions say, you can still use the 100-yard open-sights while a scope is attached. I'm sorry if the picture isn't that great. Also, it should be noted I have not test-fired the rifle with the mount attached yet, so I have no opinion in that regard, either. However, overall I am very impressed with this product. In the instructions the gentleman indicates he owns and fires all the guns he makes scope mounts for, so there must have been some R&D gone into this.
To this point, my opinion is that this is a very good product.
