So I'm considering buying an svt-40 for my next purchase, i saw one for sale with a 2 port muzzle break and one with a 6 port muzzle break. What's the difference ?

the six port is the early model and the two port was late production. The two port is easier to clean while the six port looks nicer in my opinion, other than that i dont think there is any difference

Let's see- 6-2=a difference of 4. Just kidding, I own both types and not much difference between the two. The machining might be a bit nicer on the earlier 6 port. It's better if u could have both in your hands and pick which one u like the best. Looking down the barrel is probably more important anyway.

2 port muzzle brake is for moose hunting, another one is for deers.
This and another useful infoo can be found in the first post of the first sticky of this forum.

It's a tip-off (for me) as to which one is more likely to have a grooved receiver. If you should ever want to add a scope to it, that's a bigger deal.

6 port = Might have a grooved receiver (early model)

2 port = Probably won't have a grooved receiver (late model)

It isn't a "written in stone" rule. These rifles were mix-mastered in the post war refurbishment program, so you never really know for sure.

Unfortunately on refurbished rifles there are no correlation at all between early/late muzzle brake and type of the receiver. There are some exceptions but in 99% cases only two original parts from the source rifle are receiver and barrel, all other are mixed from different periods and plants. It is because of the way refurbishing was accomplished - several hundred rifles had to be completely disassembled, components mixed and inspected and then lesser amount of rifles were assembled back and tested. And only damaged receiver or bore would have made them took apart those two parts.

6 port is louder in my opinion, I have both and if I let someone shoot my 6 port svt then I hear louder flop sound of the muzzle brake. Not so with 2 port one.

I agree! I remember shooting my 2 port without ear pieces while coyote hunting and my ears were ok. But my 6 port is too freaking loud, must have ear plugs in or else my ears get seriously buzzed.
