SVT-40 reality check :-)

That's an awesome YouTube channel and definitely worth subscribing to if you have any interest in black powder and/or traditional hunting.

Saved for when I'm somewhere with sound. I'm curious to give this a watch!

I can remember before I owned any firearms playing Red Orchestra and just loving the SVT-40. Now that I own one, I love it that much more.

In this video, he is saying that this is the only Russian gun that can explode in your face due to the faulty design of the bolt?

Looks like it… hence his recommendation to always use eye protection when firing this rifle.

Good question! I can't quite understand what he is saying about why a cartridge blew up out of battery. Anyone have some insight?

He is saying that the firing pin is sticking out when it pushes the live round into the chamber and that's what causes premature detonation of the primer. The round then explodes outside of the chamber. That was my understanding....

Replay the segment from 6:24 to about 6:37 repeat if necessary.

Watch it again and listen carefully. He said the firing pin was broken. In addition, he was talking about a specific incident with a specific rifle at a specific time & place. There is an abundance of hooey stories on the internetz, lets not start another eh? Regards, Tony  :)

On any semi automatic rifle including the SVT40 it's a good idea to disassemble the bolt at times and clean the firing pin and firing pin channel so as not to end up with
a slam fire.
Never had one on my SVT40 but my BD44 gave me a few surprises, grease in the firing pin bore!

And to check the return when cleaning

Just as an aside, of the first generation self loading service rifles of the WWII era, about the only one I can think of that was capable of firing grenades was the M1 rifle. Priorities I guess.

About the only ones that had muzzle brakes were the AG/42b & the SVT 40.

Love my SVT 40, I really lucked out on it as it is very accurate even offhand and I find the brake is superb and really well designed. The AG/42b has a fascinating brake design but I have yet to shoot one.
