How do these shoot? Any reccomendations of what to look for if ordering one? Is ammo hard to find? Anyone reccomend a dealer (hope I'm allowed to ask that--no offence intended if I'm not...) I had posted this in Red Rifles, but it's probably more appropriate here.

Try before you buy.

I got one, then found out I did not like it much. Lots of recoil (well not that bad but the shape of the butt stock makes it worst).

And ammo. I have had a lot of trouble with milsurp ammo that jammed in it. For me it was not worth the pain, I sold it.

Obviously some will say they love SVTs so try and find someone who will let you shoot one and make up your own opinion.

The first trip to the range I fired 160 rounds of 180 grain during t-shirt weather, didn't even have a bruise. There is a learning curve for the gas adjustment to get the rounds to cycle properly. Different rounds need different adjustments. Make sure you buy the gas tool for it. I get my best groups with the PRVI 150gr but the Czeck surplus ammo is a close second. I've ordered some of the Russian surplus ammo but haven't recieved it yet. This gun seems to shoot quite well regardless of ammo, but a few tweaks of the gas release is required. If you always use the same rounds, then no further adjustment is really required.

I quite enjoy shooting mine and even took a whitetail doe with it during the first part of hunting season.

They're quite the thing to clean...and corrosive surplus is not good for the barrel. A lot of parts to disassemble...not at all like taking a .22 to the range and not even cleaning it...you have no choice.

But yeah, they are a well made piece of ordnance and interesting.
