Hey guys/girls

I've stripped down my SVT 40 today. Took off the shellack, and used degreaser to get the wood down to almost new.

The wood still has some dark staining to it around the handhold on the buttstock but otherwise looks decent.

My question is, does anyone know what the period appropriate refinish would be for these rifles?

I know Mosins were either
A) Linseed Oil
or
B) Pine Tar followed by Shellack.

If anyone has any information I'd appreciate it. Otherwise I'm likely to go with the pine-tar.

-Thanks

Did a strip with paint thinner

Followed by squirt with degreaser

Let dry for a week

Two coats of hot pine tar cut with turpentine

From Google:

Prewar and early war time period - soaked in oil-bitumen mixture or boiled oil, and finished with few layers of VK-1 lacquer\varnish
In August-September 1942 was introduced erzatz finish based on liquid pine tire and triple lacquering

VK-1 = Nitrocellulose lacquer
