SVT-40 scope mount screwup...

I tried every mount I could find on several SVT's. Was not happy with any of them.
One was sold a few years ago, the square one. There were I think 3 clamp bolts and I tightened those suckers up till they squeaked.

Then, on firing the rifle...the mount moved forward on each shot, till the bolt carrier handle started hitting the mount. This despite the clamp bolts being extremely tight. So, you had to keep moving it back

Then the corrosive ammo turned the bore dark, even though I cleaned it immediately with boiling water and bore cleaners of various types.

I hate those rifles. Sorry.

As for this situation, the spring plunger on the rear of the repro mount was to return it to it's spot after the recoil of firing. I'd do what M1-Garand above did, file the hole lower and make a new pin. (if the hole is too high)

The worst thing is, you have to clean the rifles immediately after firing, and that means the mount has to come off. As for holding zero...
The Russians stopped using them as sniper rifles after a while I believe.

Best setup is probably to install a side mount Dragunov style scope. Not stock but a lot better.

I did not like shooting corrosive ammo in mine either, too much to clean with the gas system etc. so I have been reloading the 7.62x54R for a few years with PPU cases and
just using the powder and bullets from the Bulgarian stuff.
Works great.

Exactly...reload and use the components. Nasty stuff that corrosive.

Any chance of pics of the mod you did and what the new pin looks like?

Are we talking Sarco mount, Accumounts, or Ukraine mount?

The Sarco mounts had a too soft pin...they broke after a while.

Here's what I did- took one of the poorly fitting repro mounts and filed the pin opening out to match the form of the receiver notch. Then I cut a piece off a large brass drift and filed it to fit the shoulders of the notch perfectly. Doesn't allow any movement (the buffering is not really necessary) and it is easily removed. No chance of damaging the notch now.

I am a klutz when it comes to uploading pictures but milsurpo has already done a great job,the only thing different I did was making the pin out of steel, key stock if I remember right.

The mount I got of ebay years ago and it is a POS,was not parallel with the bore so had to do some bending on it and shimming the scope to get it to zero and get the reticle to
correspond with the markings on the turret.
But after al lot of fussing with it it finally works OK,easy to remove and install and it holds zero.

Beautiful job! Love the way you used brass to protect the receiver and filled the slot right in. I never liked the huge amount of slop built in to the slot.

Westrifle has a mount/scope combo as well
Would like to know if these or the corwin one are decent as I would like to get one for my svt40

Give Martin an email and ask him, he's a straight shooter and will give you an honest reply. Not many places are better to deal with than Corwin Arms, their customer service is really good.
