Hey guys,

I've got an SVT-40 that I'd like to put a scope on but I do NOOOOOT want to drill/tap or permanently alter the rifle in any way. Luckily I have the sniper rails on the side so I could put an old-school WW2 scope on, however I'm curious if modern scope mounts exist that goes onto the sniper rails - allowing me to attach a more modern scope. I did some snooping around and didn't come up with anything. Anyone know?

If you know a machinist you might be able to get one made, other than that I haven't seen any other commercial scope mounts anywhere.

Cool! Yeah that's exactly what I'm looking for.

Glad to know I'm not the only one in the boat... If I happen to find out about any commercial mounts I'll be sure to let you know.

B-square used to make one, but good luck finding one.

The repo of the original scope mount would be from $160 to $200.

Just for fun on it, I think of one design that would not require any drilling and stay accurate. The problem is that it will not be cheap to build one.

I tried every mount out there...they all sucked. They are a very hard rifle to scope. Although, I never did catch up with a B Square mount.

There was a run of Canadian made scope mounts that Frontier and PS Militaria were selling a few years ago...they looked like a block and they moved forward with every round no matter how tight you tightened the through bolts...sigh.

But most/all of them require you to remove the mount every time you clean the gun, which is every time you shoot it.

The pictured mount from FAL files...you'd be lucky to have your chin on the stock...forget about a cheekweld.

I lucked out with one of these mounts on ebay. Tried it and the fit is great. A large screw secures the mount on the rifle but that's not the problem. The weakest point in this mount is the bow behind the mount. Anyone who have tried shooting the SVT knows how much recoil there is to propel the mount forward. Needless to say, mine snapped from the screws. I had to bubba a piece of aluminum to replace it.

Here's one from ebay....built from Midland, Ontario. Pricey though but its your best option.

anyone ever think of using the dove tail under rear sight? (assuming there is one like a mosin) then using a mosin rail mount?

what about jmecks mount? would that work?

if there is no dove tail could you not shave off rear sight and drill and tap it? (sorry purists)

these are all thoughts ive been wondering about

Short answer: No.

Long answer:

The whole rear sight assembly on an SVT is one piece - kind of a bridged riser - coming off the barrel. The pin you see in the pic below is just the pivot point for the graduated sights. Had this pic kicking around from the last time this discussion came up. Sorry for the crappy quality, but you get the idea.
