Did a search for SVT-40, and after wading through 400 some odd posts figured if it was already asked, I wasn't going to spend anymore time looking.

Anyways, I've got a bit of an issue with my SVT-40 sniper that I need some help with.

My problem is that in order for me to hit point of aim at 100 metres, I need to set the scope to about the 520 metre or so setting.

Obviously, this isn't right but the SVT-40 PU mount doesn't contain any obvious scope adjustment setup like the Mosin Nagant has. So I set about doing some research on the SVT-40 snipers. Obviously, the snipers of the era must have had SOME way to deal with issues like this. I just needed to find out how.

And that endeavour has spanned the last month with no success. Lots of information on when they were used, how many were issued, reports of success in the field, etc, but absolutely NOTHING in regards to the sighting in of the rifles.

So, I'm thoroughly annoyed now and am equally tired of looking.

Can anyone tell me how to sight this thing in? :(

I think you may have to shim the base. A lot of the recent SVT 'sniper' models are actually reproductions, not original snipers. AFAIK, when the base is installed, it is fitted and zeroed, and is not adjustable.

Hmmm.

I had considered the possibility of having to remove the turret cap and dial the rifle in that way, but it seems a bit odd to me...

As it is now, I have to dial it up to 500 metres or so to hit point of aim. If I remove the cap and move it to the 100 metre setting, I doubt that there would be enough traverse in the reticle to be able to dial the scope up to the maximum 1300 metre setting. I highly doubt I would ever need to, but I would like to know I can.

As for the ammo I'm using, currently just the Igman 150 grain stuff. Until I get some reloading stuff for this cartridge, that's all I'll be using.

Yeah, sounds like you have a couple options then:
1) Zero it at the 500m marking and then adjust the turret adjustment to the 100m setting. This would be a quick fix but then you will only have up to 800m at your disposal. (1300-500=800m) For a 4x scope, this is plenty IMHO.
2) As Prosper stated, you could shim the scope to get it closer to a true zero.

Any Russian rifle gurus have any ideas?

Before you go adjustment happy, try some milsurp loads. I found igman shot low in my svt compared to hungarian milsurp I transfered to boxer primed cases.

I see your problem more clearly now as I just zeroed one on a Nagant Sniper this aft. At leat there is lateral adjustment built into the mount on them via the two lock screws on the mount. I also had to adjust for a great deal of windage as well. Had to do some filing of the mount to accomodate that one, b ut all is well now....
