Svt-40 vs Mosin accuracy

a mosin in good shape is very accurate. Being bolt action it would be more accurate in my opinion.
But like any other ww2 or earlier milsurp, it really depends on the condition

So far my SVT40 is more accurate than my Mosin 91/30s and M44 with surplus ammo, but I've worked up loads that tunes in the 91/30 another inch or two tighter.

Highly dependant on the individual rifle - lots of variability from rifle to rifle, though the Mosin, in ideal condition, has more accuracy potential.

All things being equal Mosin. In reality it's going to be the rifle. SVT 40s have a muzzle break to protect the crown, where as Mosins do not. Crown wear and damage is a major cause of Mosin inaccuracy.

I'm waiting for my first mosin to arrive so I can compare with my svt. I will post results with same ammo. I can probably do poorly equally with both.:(

Depends partially on what sort of Mosin we're talking about as well. A Finnish M28 or M39 is nothing to sneeze at for accuracy.

But then, I'm guessing you're looking at one of the more common M91/30's?

So... Any members ever get around to testing these two?

Many of us have both. Like has been mentioned, it's dependent on the condition of the individual rifle. By design the Mosin is more accurate, but a good bore in a SVT 40 will outshoot a worn Mosin.

Mosin is more accurate by default, don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with svt I have two of them and I love them but a minty mosin out shoots them any day specialy long range..

Owning both I can say this is my exeperience aswell. PS nice arms!

So what sort of groupings would you think are the most typical of an SVT40?

Average SVT, popping mil surp ammo - something your average CGN'r should expect...?

When all conditions are right and the gaz adjustement is right on, with goods hanloads my SVT is way more accurate than my 91, i can get sub moa, the SVT must be one of the most accurate semi auto ever made... JP.

I recall reading some time ago on Mosin Nagant dot net that the SVT 40 was originally intended to serve as the USSR's main sniper rifle in WW2, but that the Soviets switched to the Mosin on account of some accuracy issues. Apparently while fairly accurate, the SVT 40s would throw one or two shots vertically as the barrel heated up, which didn't happen (or at least not to the same degree) with the Mosin Nagant.

I just recently got my SVT40 cycling reliably after polishing a chamber that needed it, and in my somewhat casual sighting-in noticed what looked like the vertical stringing described above. When firing my groups with surplus ammo for the postal match, I made a point of waiting longer between shots for the barrel to cool, and couldn't see any significant difference between it and my M38 Mosin Carbine.

I have another SVT40 that I haven't fired and a few Mosins that I hope to shoot with the surplus ammo that I've got on hand. Until then I can only speculate on which one's better, but suspect that they are pretty close, especially if the SVT isn't being fired too fast.

Cheers,

Frank

Very cool.

I have a scout scoped mosin, and an SVT rocking original iron sights... I havn't gotten enough trigger time with either to really determin which one will outshoot the other.

These SVT's are amazing rifles though. Not only do they have serious collector value and history to boot, but wow they're cheap.

I was thinking about getting an M305b from Marstar, but when Ammosource has the SVT for $250... #### I may just have to get another one to drill & tap for a scope mount!
