SVT-40 Vs Mosin-Nagant Accuracy (with optics)

Hey guys I was wondering how the accuracy of the SVT-40 compares to that of the Mosin Nagant at 500+ yards using optics. I was thinking that the Mosin being a bolt-action gave it a little bit of an advantage in the accuracy department, but I've never fired either. Anyone have experience with both?

500+ yards begins to stretch the capability of a 3.5 or 4 power scope. Minute of barn door should be a reasonable estimate.

You can put bigger scopes on than the originals these days.

Plus just so you know actual Sniper in WWII could hit a man sized stationary target at 800 yards. This was from actual interviews with German Snipers after WWII. 500 wasn't an issue for them.

No idea yet. I plan on finding out with the SVT-40 fairly soon. The biggest trick is using match grade ammo handloaded to the specific rifle. Fireball and I plan on finding out how accurate the SVT-40 really is with modern optics and modern match grade ammo. Really looking forward to it.

With a 24" barrel and 1:10 twist we will be using heavier ammo. These rounds should be capable of 1000 yards with very similar although possible slightly better (bigger powder capacity) than .308.

In particular it was Matthäus Hetzenauer and he reportedly liked using the Zeiss Zeilsechs (6X scope).

His other rifle fires a subsonic 250 grain 9mm round. It's more interesting that they couldn't dig up a SVD for him.

In the hands of good sniper mosin is deadly at 1000+.
The rifle on his back is back up rifle range 400 meters.

I have a original mosin sniper that was set up by a Russian armourer.I can hit a 6 inch gong out at 700 meters all day with it.I find them to be a very accurate rifle.The svt-40 is a nice accurate rifle too, but during the war the mosin was preferred because it was easier to maintain.

the fact that they require less training and are much cheaper to produce played a very important role

As to Mosin accuracy out of all Russian rifles it is my favorite (available in Canada) rifle.
