I gotta say, I love the SVT-40 rifle, the history of this gun, the cal; the feel.. everything.

I'm torn!

This is my 'shooter' SVT-40. 1943, with AVT stock. Good condition with some wear marks most likely from the crate. It was one of the SVT-40 Lever Arms Christmas deals.

It's very accurate at 100yrds with iron sights, very satisfied. I really like shooting with irons. I also love shooting my other, now prohib. rifle with a Posp scope. (I'm doing my part for the CZ/SA/ every gun in Canada cause).

The one thing I wish my SVT-40 had was a scope. The receiver does not have the original sniper scope rails.
So, I have a Posp that is currently unused, a Molot Posp Rail I had bought over a year ago, for a SKS project that didn't happen, I like the SKS as it is in original configuration.
I prefer the Russian surplus rifles in original form. I'm not a hardcore purest but still a moderate purest. I don't mind modifications, as long as its done right and makes sense. The bubba thing I understand and can appreciate if done right, but it's not my thing.
I'm a tinkerer. I have an itch to tweak my shooter grade range rifles. That being said, I have unfired 'Safe Queen' red rifles that WILL remain untouched. This brings me to my torment.

On one hand I'm torn about altering a piece of history and decreasing the collector value ( I don't plan on selling this rifle... ever) , on the other hand I'd like to improve on the accuracy and fun factor by adding the Posp. Considering this is my range SVT, adding the posp increasing the value for myself, by expanding its capability.
On the plus side of keeping it "Red" the Molot rail is made for the SKS, Mosin and SVT-40. The Posp is classic Russian. If I add this rail and scope the rifle is still all Russian.
What I would really like to own is a Dragunov.... wouldn't we all. Since owning a Dragunov or variant is illegal in Canada the SVT-40 is as close as I'll get.

After eying up the Molot rail on the SVT-40 with the Posp, this setup would fit brilliantly. The fit, cheek weld work perfectly for me. The part that I don't like is the need to drill a couple holes in the receiver and maybe the stock (I'd avoid this unless there is a stability issue) . I don't like the idea of modifying a historical piece. I have the skill and tools to do the modification, that's not an issue. I know I'd love this setup... ARG!
I'm buying another couple, maybe more :p SVT-40's as a collector pieces so modding my shooter shouldn't be that big a deal... right? LOL again CONFLICTED! I'm not looking for a Yes or No from the CGN crowd, I'm just venting, debating... blah blah blah.

Anyway, this is how I would set this SVT up, with the Molot rail and Posp. The Posp is calibrated for 7.62x54. with range finder (great scope)

My SVT-40 has some dings as mentioned, right where the rail would mount. The dings bother me a bit, not very apparent in the pic, but the rail would cover some of the dings. The pic with the Posp on the rifle is propped up to get an idea of how it would be configured.
I'm not sold on this project. That being said it is on my mind a lot

the dings.. minor, I've seen worse.;)

Molot rail...

What it would look like with the Posp and a slip on butt pad (bad shoulder)

There are 3 options I have at my disposal.
1. The Molot rail comes with rivets. Rivets are tricky to seat properly. I have the tools, but I'm not crazy about rivets.
2. I can tack weld the rail to the receiver. and re-blue the welded area.
3. Drill, tap , use machine screws and Loctite. This worked well on my CZ858.

I didn't have a second thought modding my CZ receiver, but it didn't have a strong history behind it either. The end results were totally worth it. Adding the Posp dramatically improved the accuracy and fun factor. I'm really concerned about the CZ858 and Swiss Arms fiasco. I don't like bureaucrats pi$$ing in our Cheerios> the fight continues! Just venting again. Keep writing letters folk

Hmmm... Posp the SVT-40... should I or shouldn't I ? LOL

Don't do it!!

Just buy another one. They're inexpensive enough. The 1943 ones are hard to find. They become rarer and rarer after 1942. Your example would have collectors drooling in the States. If you're going to scope one then get the sniper version and a replica mount/scope. Please leave that 43 alone!

You could always pick up another SVT-40 to modify or keep as original.....

It were me, I'd go with option 3 with your SVT and mount. Drilling and tapping is probably the best way to mount that rail.....

I've mounted the same scope and mount to my SVT. Notched the stock slightly, drilled and tapped. The steel in SVT receivers is quit soft, and easy to drill. I really like the combination. For me, it made the rifle much more fun to shoot. Rifles are cheap and plentiful, go for it.

I know very little about the SVT's are far as their collectability based on years and such, so I won't comment on that.

As far as mounting the Molot rail, I would definitely drill and tap. I mounted that same rail on a Russian SKS and I loved it. I switched back and fourth between a POSP and a PK-A. I love that setup, it suits the rifle perfectly and keeps it very "red".

Leave. it. alone. Bubba.

Get one with rails and do it right if you must have a scoped SVT. Sell or trade this one for what you need.

Like I said in the first post: "I don't plan on selling this rifle... ever".
Selling or trading is not in the equation.
I plan on adding a proper scoped sniper svt to my collection.
What I need is a plate of Buffalo wings and a pint of Guinness.

This SVT is off the modification table. The posp is going on a Ruger 10/22... because my name is Bubba.;)

Seriously, I'm ditching the SVT40/Posp idea. The posp is in deep storage until there is a CZ classification resolution.

I think the Posp would be great on a SVT-40, totally fits the gun.
Every Surplus red rifle is collectible so I'd feel the same way with a beat up SVT-40.
Oh well, it would be a kick ass setup. :sniper:
