Hey guys,

I just purchased a SVT-40 and I was wondering if anyone knew the proper sling attachment for it. Pictures would be highly appreciated. My gun came with a original sling, which contains three pieces, 2 leather bands, and the sling itself, and I have no idea how to put it together properly.

Thanks,
Zygy

The leather bands are called "Dog Collars". They hold the sling to the gun. The loops at the end of the sling is for the dog collars to go into. If you have any problems with your svt, please feel free to PM me as I just got mine figured out. Happy to pass on the wisdom that was passed on to me by others here.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the canvas sling with two leather dog collars is for a Mosin (short and long for carbine and rifle respectively).

The SVT sling has permanently attached leather straps affixed to each end of a canvas sling. The very similar sling for the PPSH41 is often sold as an SVT sling but it is shorter.

Of course in a pinch they would use anything I suppose. Here is my Finn capture SVT40 with a proper sling.

Here is a good link that shows SVT slings.

Yes you are correct, the PPSH sling was also used on the SVT-40. Two different slings were used during the war. The sling that I have, described above, fits just fine. Although I have to adjust the sling for my purposes. I think thats why there were two different slings. The sling you have is non-adjustable, mine is. It may have been a preference or a change back in the day too, not just a resource issue. Mine might, MIGHT, have been a design change to better equip soldiers (i.e. adjustable sling can be used to steady the rifle no matter who uses it, comfortability while carrying)

Zygy:
Your 'original sling' with dog collars is a MN sling, designed to go into the slots of the stock. Marstar sold SVT with that sling included.
SVT shares the same sling with PPSH, it's web with leather extensions. I shoot with the sling wrapped around the the fist, so I had to lock it into 2nd or 3d hole from the end, this way it's loose enough.
