hi guys thinking about buying a svt 40 i was wondering if you can handload for them with thejr fluted chamber or not ?where is the best place to buy them right now?

I handload for mine. Mine does not flute it very much and does not affect reloading at all. I can't see the fluting affecting reloading much as you are running the brass through a die. Full length resize only as my bolt won't close very well on a neck sized round. I bought mine when the UA DE 09 batch first came in for $300. It looks like most places have them for $350-$400 now. Try tradeex of frontier.

Yes you can hand load for them, I use Lee Dies.
Use the cheapo brass for load development or gas adjustment, S&B, and have healthy supply of Norma and Lapua brass for the target loads.

They take real well to handloads. Between a reasonably light powder charge and that handy gas system, it's not too hard on brass. I use Prvi brass sized w/ RCBS LF dies from Tradeex mostly 'cause it's what I started with, and have had good luck with it.

Cast and SP can sometimes be a problem with the SVT40, you mght have to do some magazine tuning when you get your rifle. Never met one that didn't like FMJ to =)

I picked up my SVT-40 earlier in the spring but have not yet loaded for it. I'm still collecting brass. I took a set of Harnady dies to a machine shop and re-manufactured the sizer from .308 to .311. I'm still collecting brass at this point and have a ton of ammo, both surplus and commercial soft points. I'm interested to know how loads are working for people. I shoot both Mosin and SVT.

I emailed Hornady and basicly said the fact that you write in your loading manual that this cartridge is commonly encountered with a .311 bore and the you only include a .308 sizing ball with your dies is ridiculous. Got an email the next day saying that a .311 expander ball is in the mail. I still don't like Hornady dies, but at least they had quick customer service.

What powders are you guys having luck with? Anyone care to share secret recipe so I have a bit of a starting point? How much powder? What bullets? Overall length? Crimp? And how many loadings are you getting before the brass fails? Thanks in advance!

The one I bought came with dies so I assume you can reload for it.:) Kind of a cool looking gun but I have never gotten around to shooting mine; suposedly they are quite accurate.

I had one made by a Machinist buddy. The expander for .311 is only actually about .308, and the .308 expander is more like .305. It needs 2 or 3 one thousands of tightness to seat and hold the bullet. I've never thought of emailing Hornady??

I've been playing a little bit to get some more accurate loads going for this wonderful rifle, but so far I've only pulled bullets from surplus rounds and have been adjusting powder charges.
