just got my svt 40, just in time for the temp to drop to -30c...brrrr and grrrr ......so i diss-assyed the old girl, cleaned her up, re-assyed. she smells a little less.......
i know the gun wont mind the temp. but i do!
i did a little research, apearantly you can adjust the gas system, can any one explain?
its sure a cool lookin gun, and loooooooooong!
does a moisen-nagget bayonet fit?
or is there a better source for pig stickers?

The gas adjustment nut is on the end of the gas piston assembly, just behind the front sight post. It is a small 5-sided nut with markings ranging from 1.1 to 1.7. If you have the proper tool use that. If not use a pair of pliers being careful not to strip the nut. The highest numbers allow the most amount of gas, however start low and work up until shell cases are ejected reliably. There are two small alignment lines, one on each side of the adjustment nut, and one on the housing. Make sure these lines are perfectly aligned or the rifle will not cycle properly. I hope this helps.

There is a little tube behind that 5 sided nut. It should be loosened before trying to turn the nut. It is underneath the heat sheild.
SVT bayos are regularily available on ebay, but good luck getting one for less then $180
Wicked fun gun otherwise. Tons of threads in the Milsurp section

I am thinking of getting an SVT 40. I saw a few so far and the rifling was pretty shabby on each of them. Where can a guy pick one up where the rifling/barrel would be in good to VG shape so that I can shoot it rather than have it destined to a recycling depot.

Here in Bonnyville - going to be -49 with the wind chill. Definitely a time to snuggle close to mama and absorb some of her body heat! :D

thanx guys! -35 today....colder tomorrow and windy.....no mosquitos tho!
i can feed the fire and surf e-bay...:)

I have one and the barrel is a bit dark. You wouldn't think much of it by looking down the thing.
It's hard to make a judgement by simply looking down the barrel however. It's not exactly a scientific way of figuring out if the rifle will shoot well.
Mine looks a little on the dark side but she shoots more accurately than my tuned M14. It's actualy the most accurate rifle I have by far. I'm amazed at what it can do from the prone on a rest at 100 meters!
They are awesome rifles though, one of my all time favorite personaly.

I recently got my svt and she performed really well on her first time out this past weekend.

Anyone know where to get a gas tool ? I saw one at p&s, any other spots ?

Cold temp is ideal to try your Tokarev. With the gas regulator set properly, no cold weather will stop from functioning flawlessly and by cold weather, dont lube, will be better.

i have seen pics that proved even the germans used em, "it was so cold our guns wouldnt shoot, our tanks would not run and our planes would not fly.........but the russians were shooting, there tanks were moving, and thier planes were in the air"
(paraphrased from german stalingrad vet in documentry)
-46 with windchill today, colder tomorrow... the gun might like it, but i dont! lol!

As well, mine is quite accurate. I took it hunting and dropped a few deers with it. It was making heart shots up to 175 yards. I never really shot it from a shooters rest, but I know it would do really well. They are fast to aim and easy to shoot, but VERY VERY LOUD

Ebay, Westrifle have too with the front sight adjusting tool if i saw correctly.

Thanks! It seems West Rifle's website is having technical difficulties, would you know off hand what they charge for these and if they are newly made pieces ? As for Ebay, it seems the bayonets are more common than gas tools (look at those bayonet prices...wow!!!). Funny how the Yanks have all the bayonets but we have all the rifles :D.

As for loudness of the SVT, I can confirm that mine is quite loud but not as bad as some of my other rifles. Mine does have the six slot muzzle break, I wonder if this makes a difference compared to the four slot in terms of how loud each shot is ?

A good guy to deal with is weimajack on the EE. I've bought quite a few rifles from him, everyone was nicer than expected.

I got my svt 40 from tradex out of Quebec. A very nice rifle, good bore and matching #s. Good service too

The tools from Westrifle (gas wrench and sight tool set) goes for 69.99. They are originals tools, not repro. Yes bayo are expensive, i bought one fews weeks ago:) For the noise, i only fired my large ports brake, loud enough but the louder rifle i have shot is my Hakim. You dont want to fire thoses without hearing protection believe me!!

Weimer Jack is the way to go.His standards are very high. Tradex has been good to me,just haven't bought any firearms off of them. Just got one from SFRC 1943 model, wrist of the stock held together with two bolts (stock was cracked ,fixed during refurb).Got it during their boxing day sale, purple bolt, mismatched mag (different forced match numbers).Good enough for the range. Think it was 279.00 total at my door
