Why the two different versions? Is one more preferable than the other? I'm thinking about buying one of these beasts, and I was just curious. Please chime in, if you have any experience with both, or any input on them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 6 port version was early war production and the 2 port was mid-late war production and they did this for ease of machining I presume. I also own a 6 port version.

Yes, supposedly a wartime measure to increase manufacturing speed.

I have both, but i kind of like the 2 port, looks big and gnarly. lol

Two theories on the ports.

Supposidly initially there was an 8 port out there, but no documented versions seen.

Then the 6 port (early war).

Then the 2 port (late war).

However, I heard that the 2 port was originally designed for the AVT40 (Automatic SVT). All documented AVT's I have seen (very few references however) have the 2 port brake.

So the question are:
Was the 2 port muzzle break designed specifically for the AVT40?
Was it late war expediency/cost cutting strategy?
Are there any documented AVT's with a 6 port brake?
Or were the two ports seen on SVT's left over AVT ports?

I have a 6 port SVT, dated 1942 at Tula, and it can be a pain to clean. Wonderful shooter though and very loud if your ear plugs happen to fall out :D.

Thats interesting. I thought the muzzle brake was an integral part of the barrel ?
Nope, the muzzle brake/front sight assembly are independant from the barrel.

My 6 port is '43 dated. Does this seem late to still have a 6 port brake?
A non refurb 43 should have the 2 ports brake. My refurb 1944 have the 6 ports brake also. They took whatever parts during refurb so that'why refurb SVT dont always have the correct parts for a given year.

I have both and to date , do not see or feel any difference. But concidering the venting area size, you would think you would feel it, as I was expecting to.

There is a small rectanular key that you need to punch out, then remove the gas piston cup, the the gasblock and everything unthreads from the barrel. The keys I've removed were tought to get out and in, I don't recommend doing it unless actually needed.

Interesting thing about the above post is it shows both variations of brakes and lists one as early and one as late.

But just below it shows the AVT compared to the SVT and the AVT has a two hole brake and the SVT has the six hole brake?????

Yes the brake and front of the gas system is one piece held by a rectangular pin. Some come out easy with a punch set and others don't want to budge.
