Having about 50% light primer strikes vs Chinese surplus.
I read that the Chinese surplus has thicker primers.

when inspecting there is a good indent into the primer, and firing it a second time does ignite the primer.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

I've had this problem for years in my SVT with the Chinese ammo, the only possible solution really in try to find a slightly longer firing pin. Other than that you kind of just have to live with it or use different ammo unfortunately. Since I finally ran out of Chinese ammo, I've refused to buy any more and have stuck with the Bulgarian and Russian stuff instead.

Well known issue with Chinese surplus. Some SVT-40s will eat it, some will be having this issue. Solution is to use East Combloc surplus. With factory SVTs there were two sets of bolt length to fine tune locking and headspace, I don't think they paid a lot of attention to it during refurb process, though I can't be sure 100%. Most practical way as I said - just use different surplus or different SVT.

There was a batch of Chinese 7.62x54 ammo "repacked" by the Czechs in white cardboard boxes. Its often being sold as Czech ammo. Unless you want to end up with another lot of Chinese ammo, watch out for those.

I had light primer strikes as well and ordered new hammer springs from Numrich. Then I ordered a case of Russian light ball (150 grain) and it runs like a top.
