SVT40 shooters feedback wanted

SVT40 has been known to dislike Chinese corrosive surplus.

It is also the only milsurp rifle I've heard of that has trouble with being able to consistently fire a certain type of military surplus ammo....

My SVT also hated commercial MFS brand stuff too. The case was a bit too fat at the rear end to fully chamber. All other stuff fed fine.

CanAm chinese or earlier corrosive Chinese ammo??

I believe it may be the corrosive, my friend and I split it, and I simply gave him the money.
However I read somewhere that the Chinese ammo has harder primers (it didn't specify which type of ammo). Which is why I have firing troubles.

That's weird 'cause I've ONLY ever fired chicom surplus from my SVT-40 and have had ZERO issues. I'm down to less than 100 rounds from my SECOND batch of 400 round from SFRC and I've had nothing but fun with this ammo.

I recently bought some Bulgarian light ball (on sale at Wholesale Sports) so I'll be starting on that in the next month or so and I'm curious to see how my SVT responds to it.

As for the non-corrosive, I haven't seen any at Wholesale or Cabela's in Winnipeg so I might order some online and compare all three kinds.

As an aside, I'm a 10 year+ BP shooter so I'm used to cleaning my musket after shooting. Therefore, using corrosive is no big deal for me.

Look forward to hearing more from this non- corrosive stuff.

Cheers !!

I'm not so sure about that. I'd been firing Chinese surplus out of mine with no problems at all. No feeding, ejecting, or primer strike issues. 100% *bang* every time. Went through half a crate of it and was getting good accuracy out to 200yards - the trajectory was matching the adjustment on the sights perfectly. Zeroed at 100 yards, moved out to 200 yards and one click on the rear sight and it was still bang on - no trouble picking off an IPSC target at 200, 5/5 on paper if I was doing my part, and 2/5 in the A box.

Was out yesterday with some of the Bulgarian silvertip and it was a different story. Reliability was there, no *bang* problems, but I was hitting 5-6" high at 100 yards. Zeroed it at 100 (always take my sight adjustment tool with me), and then moved out to 200, clicked up the rear sight, and it was going 5-6" high again. At 300, I clicked up the rear sight for the range, and I was sailing a good 12-16" high.

For my SVT, I'm going to stick to the Chinese. The trajectory indicates it follows the ballistics of the sight way better, which indicates it's a closer match to the original design spec. That doesn't mean that the Bulgarian silvertip is bad, just that it's a bit hotter than the rifle was designed for.

Both are fine out to 100 yards for group sizes, pretty decent accuracy and all. It's once I start heading out to the 2-300 yard lines that the Bulgarian is giving me grief trying to figure out elevation and holdover.

The Chinese I got off TradEx - 1971 production. The Bulgarian I got off WSS, and was also (I didn't notice until I got home) 1971 production.

And it isn't a case of "Your Mileage May Vary" but that "Your Mileage WILL vary." These are old guns firing old ammo. There are so many variables at play. It's going to take some experimentation to figure out which ammo your rifle likes.

Mine likes the Chinese and the MFS hunting loads, but doesn't seem to be a fan of the Bulgarian. But that's Ok, because my Tula M44 likes the Bulgarian just fine, and I only shoot that one out to 100 yards so I'm a lot less concerned about trajectory and holdover at longer distances with it.

To further muddy the waters, my svt's shoot both the bulgarian & chinese surplus to point of aim at 100. I have yet to try the can-am non corrosive but I cant see why it would be any different from the surplus.

I use mainly MFS and PRVI as I'm trying to get the best possible accuracy out of several SVT's as an experiment. I have one former sniper with an original SVT scope and Russian replica mount that will easily put 5 in 2 inches at 100 yards (free-floated as from the refurb). Often the group will have 3 in an inch and a half. Just yesterday I tested my $200.00 Lever Arms SVT after bedding it with pressure at the forend tip and shot a 2.75 inch 6 shot group with 4 of the shots in 1.50 inch (using the iron sights, of course). This is starting to make me wonder if the innacuracy tales are one of those interweb myths.

Milsurpo

I'm nnot sure about that.
Like I said, they have been known to not like Chinese surplus. Meaning some have had problems with it. I'm talking function, not performance. I've heard it a number of times from SVT owners. Not all, but enough.

Fair enough. Each rifle is its own beast, especially vintage rifles. Add in the variables that come with long term storage mass produced ammo...

Well guys. I took the plunge and purchased a thousand rounds. I am hoping it was not a mistake but 300 bucks with free shipping is good deal. I do not get out very often nor have I even shot my sniper SVT or any for that matter. As soon as I do I will let you guys know.

I was struggling finding rounds and my couple hundred random surplus rounds gave me second thoughts based on gas adjusting issues with these guns that I had read. One of the guys at Canadammo said he put a few hundred rounds through an SVT on the weekend with gas setting 1.3 (I think) with no problems.

Apparently this stuff has only been available for a few weeks so hopfully it is good reliable new production. I have had ok luck with Norinco in the past so hoping all will be good and goes bang reload and bang etc!!!!!

My SVT shoot anything well. The chamber even got one weird gauge in it (probably from someone cleaning it...)

MFS 203gr and Chinese stuff work perfect. I get an odd fail to feed once in a while (most likely my fault)

That chinese stuff is sure dirty.
