A quick internet search tells me that the -2 engineering change was only produced in 1988-89. Then came a short run of guns marked as 629-2E before the switch to the 629-3, also in 1989.
I was curious today to see the exact year of my 686 no dash But this info is not available anywhere. Seems some people have S&W manuals with all the serials numbers and matching years or shipping dates from the factory.
Apparently not. Every company seems to have a different approach to their historical info, some are very transparent, some not at all.
In this case, it may well be related to the fact that S&W has changed hands several times since the 1970s, which makes ownership of that kind of information less obvious.
