Hi all,

So I've noticed either or seem to pop up used on occasion. The Sport II was around $650 when it first came out but Cabela's is running it for $829 now.

What's the difference between these two, other than the lack of ejection port cover and a forward assist? Is one preferable over the other? It feels wrong to not have an ejection port cover after using a C7 for a few years.

Eugene Stoner's original design didn't have a forward assist, it was added later on at the U.S. Army's request, U.S.A.F. GAU-5's didn't have them at all.

I can't remember the Product line but there were more models at one time. If I recall correctly one had some kind of unique rifling. They were higher end, the Sport was introduced as an entry level Rifle. I had an original, and really liked it. The Sport ll had a few problems with how the upper and lower mated, but that's the only problem I'm aware of, and pretty obvious to spot. I don't think you can go wrong with a S&W M&P-15.

The sport originally had a 5R 1-8 barrel. I think they gave that up and added an ejection port cover and forward assist. I have a sport II and have had no issues in the 2 years I've had it. There is a bit of a gap between the upper and lower receiver at the back just below the charging handle but it's not bad and doesn't affect function.

Is the 5R barrel worthwhile?

You won't find 5R rifling in a Sport II and the Sport was discontinued when the Sport II came out. You may find a used Sport though.

Other M&P 15 models have 5R but you are looking ad upper end models that also come with other features.

Both versions are fine, the second is more "complete" to today's standard specs due to the dust cover and FA. I have a 2 and it's one of the most reliable pieces of equipment I think anyone can own. That said, don't pay the absurd $950 I'm seeing it go for now. It should be a 650-700 dollar rifle.
