I'm think of swapping out the barrel on my Savage 10TR and going with something shorter (20" instead of 24") or going with a better quality barrel. The rifle, however, doesn't have the barrel nut.

How would one go about removing the barrel, and then installing another one? How does one then check/adjust for headspace?

I got a smooth barrel nut wrench.
If ever you go to EOSC someday, i could bring barrel vice, barrel nut wrenches, and 308 go/nogo gauges...

Oh and get a new recoil lug with your new barrel.
One with a pin so it stays indexed with receiver .
If i would of known at the time my life would of been easier.

Thank you for the kind offer. I go to EOSC regularly for their IDPA matches. If you also shoot them, we could meet up after the match. If not, I will PM you to see which day of the week you are there and I'll bring my rifle over.

BTW.....where does one source a recoil lug with pin?

I am more of an IPSC type of guy, although shooting my stock G17 gen 5 would be really well suited for IDPA.
You can PM me when you know you are going to EOSC and see if it can coordinate, I usually go 2 to 4 times a month.
I broke the links at the .com so you'll need to fix them.

Here is an example of a pinned recoil lug which makes the job easier.

This is my exact barrel nut wrench kit, notice the second wrench has a smooth interior.

The vice I use

Headspace gauges I got once again

How many rounds through the barrel?
Will you sell it?
I am asking as I am soon swapping out my 10TR receiver for an ultimatum receiver.
Will re-use my IBI savage small shank pre-fit on my Ultimatum, but my 10TR will now be without a barrel.
Factory 10TR barrels aren't the greatest, but I also like all my guns to be functional.

If your barrel ain't purchased yet, you can get bigger muzzle threads too for extra meat at the muzzle
Factory 10TR left, IBI M40 with 3/4x24 right, both .308

How the setup will look like changing barrels, we will have to see how we can secure the vise at EOSC

If you have no barrel but you’ll need to clamp the barrel in a barrel vice such as a viper or something similar. Then use an action wrench to remove the action. After that if you going with a barrel that does use a nut it’s easy spin the barrel on head space it and tighten the nut.
