How does a ten year-old Swarovski Habicht AV 3-9X36 compare optically to a new VX-3 2.5-8X36?
Most info I glean off the net say it's very close to a Z3 and should still hang with the newer Leupold, but if anyone on here has some personal experience I'd certainly like to hear it.

Having owned two of the 3-9x36 AV, as well as four of the 3-10x42AV, and having used the 2.5x8x36 VX3, I find the AV optically superior to the VX3.

Agree.

My 4-12x50 AV is superior in every respect to the Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50 that I own. I know this is not the magnification specified but I have little reason to believe that comparison would be any different. For what it's worth I am also extremely impressed with my Kahles AH 3-9x42.

I have the Swaro AV 4-16x50mm and it is better compared to 2 or 3 50mm Leupold VX3 scopes which I own. I wouldn't pay a premium for it compared to a newer Leupold but it is optically very darn good. If you can score one for a reasonable price I would take it over a leupold.
