Going to upgrade my binos for a sheep hunt this summer. I've been honing in on the Swarovski 12x42 NL Pure & was thinking it might be nice having the higher magnification from a 10x42 & it seems like you aren't really giving up much for field of view & light gathering (seems like 12x42 NL pures are about the same for field of view & light gathering as 10x42 ELs) & the forehead rest gives some extra stability when using without the tripod.

This would be my go to hunting bino.

Anyone have these or have some insight they can offer as to whether this is a good move or if I should just stick to the 10x42 ?

I haven't tried them but lots of guys, online, say 12x are hard to hold steady. If it was me I would either go with 8x and pack 12x or a spotter with a tripod. NL pures are sweet bino

I just moved up to 10x and I miss my 8x.

This was my perspective as well when going from 12x to 8x - I don't feel limited by the loss of magnification but am happy with the overall usability of them. My use case is generally <1000m though, distances may be much greater when sheep hunting that will downplay the stability factor. The Swaros are excellent though, I don't think you'll regret that choice.

i see the points for lower power if being held freehand. But if your glassing at distance or for extended periods of time Im wanting higher magnification. I usually sit and rest with my binos on my knees if glassing at distance or use my 12x on my tripod if still hunting. I have two pairs of binos. One pair of Leica 10x and one pair of 12x Vortex Razors. I dont find the 10x uncomfortable using freehand.

1. do you know yet if you have swaro eyes? after playing with swaro, Zeiss and Leica...turns out I have Leica eyes and rave about the ultravid hd or higher, will take a fair bit of time and money, and or trial and error if you can find ways to borrow or compare them against each other, it's more important you find and use what your eyes/mind prefer, not the 'best on paper' you think may work for you, they will all work, heck you'd likely find all the same sheep with some Nikon monarchs but if investing this much to do it right the first time...find out what eyes you have

2. on the nl 12x, in your comparison or trials see if eye position sensitivity is a thing, those pures with their big ole fov's mean bit of fish bowl eye piece you gotta get your eyeball into the sweet spot in the bowl so to speak, your binos should come up naturally and instantly position for you and instantly bring that wow factor to your mind and smile to your mouth...if you have to fight for positioning every time you bring those binos up then keep shopping, doesn't matter how much they cost

hope that helps, for me swaro is basically a little better than Nikon at prices beyond everything else lol, pigs in lipstick really, so don't get hung up on brands, figure out what your eyes are, extra 20' fov will come with a trade off, you gotta figure out what that is, a 10x that suits you will find more game than a 12x you need to fight with imo

I had the same decision Last year when I decided to upgrade my 10x42 ELs. I ended up going with the 10x42 NLs And the forehead rest as well as the outdoorsman stud an adapter. If you end up going with the 12x42 Order the outdoorsman stud and adapter and run it on a tripod you will think me later
