I need help as i am getting conflicting stories on what is better. I am looking for a high end long distance scope that is excellent in low light conditions and one that is illuminated. I will put this on my 270 WSM and hope to use it for big game. Although i would like a long distance scope it would be used more for scouting the feilds with most shots coming from under 400 yards. The models i am considering are the Swarvoski Z6i 2.5-15x56 Illuminated with ballistic turret, Zeiss 3-12x56 illuminated and the Leupold VX-3L 4.5-14x56 illuminated. Can anyone offer me some thoughts on what direction i should go.

Thanks.

Darryl

Zeiss for sure! but there all good choices..

You gotta look through em all, your eye may see different than everyone else out there.

I like Zeiss optics , Leupolds didn't "feel" right to my eye. Quality wise, you can't really go wrong with what you will be spending.

Good deal on Leupold here:

You'll pay double or more for the Zeiss or Swarovski's you have listed and I doubt you'll notice a big difference seeing as legal hunting times in MB are 1/2 hour before sunrise until 1/2 hour after sunset.

If you're doing a lot of glassing, I'd invest in a really good set of binoculars before spending 1000's of $ on a scope, plus it's really not safe to use a scope for this purpose.

A rifles cope is intended to be a sighting device,it is not to be used in place of binoculars for glassing, for obvious safety reasons.

I have the VXL 4.5-14x56 on my Cooper 25-06AI, absolutely a fantastic hunting scope IMHO. I have high end Leupolds on everything and I am quite happy with the performance and value. YMMV

I am surprized stubblejumper didn't mention the Kahles. Also worth a look, not sure if they have any illuminated reticles..

Go to an F-class match and look at what the guys that shoot long range in front of witnesses and keep score shoot. Ask a few what they wish the had, if they fall outside the norm. Note the brands that aren't there.

I have a Swarovski and plenty of Leupolds. I wish I had the bucks to buy more Swarovskis, if that means anything... they are great scopes. Don't get me wrong Leupolds are fantastic scopes but if money was no object I would be shooting with Swaro's and S&B's. I would pick Swaro if you were to ask me.

Isn't that kind of like going to a NASCAR race to see what new vehicle to get for family excursions? :D

I suspect you'd find S&B,Nightforce and Hensoldt as the top choices. Most scopes at those matches are far from ideal hunting rigs, especially at 400 yards max range. I have guns that weigh less than some of them. :)

I am with glockforever on this one. The swaro line of hunting optics does not have an equal in my opinion. The glass is absolutely crystal clear and in low light by far the best. My leupold Mark 4 lr/t does not compare to the swaro. I would rate them leupold 3, zeiss 2 and swaro 1 by a long shot.

For hunting swaro takes the prize, target rigs wear NF. slowly all leupolds are being replaced with Swaro, because of clarity, low light capabilites, durability, and refinement.

Not really, when his question was this:

Sounds like he wants the "race iron" to me. Or do think he wants the race day performance with drugstore gear?

Don't overlook Kahles, I have an older Helia 4S and it's fantastic. I think the Helia CSX 3-12x56 would suit your needs.

Thanks everyone. This is all great feedback that will most defiantly not only help me, but maybe others in their search for a great scope. I now have a clearer vision on what i want. Cheers!

NF is signifcantly heavier than hunting optics being considered, is it not? I wouldn't use one on hunting rig although they meet the criteria, but would use a swarovski.

Man cannot stress enough that a scope is NOT to be used as a glassing device. Witnessed a fellow watch other hunters through his scope with a round in the chamber, called it quits right then and there. Will not tolerate someone pointing a gun at others much less loaded. The fart new better too. you will remember that hunter that was shot in Alberta last year, his friend gutted him at 300 yards, that guy did work for me. the guy that died. Needless senseless loss of life. Buy good binos and a cheaper scope if you have to, but don't lift your rifle until you are sure that its pointing at the animal you are going to legally shoot and you are certain if you miss you know where that dang bullet is going. sorry for the rant, it just can't be stressed enough

Well I have had all of them..I like NF..Swarovski and Zeiss are great I have a Z5 I am going to sell for another NF....leupold can .... .. ..... .

Not sure where the glassing at people comes in?? you being Dizzy again? lol
