I was checking out a 1905 Carl Gustav M96 6.5x55 which really caught my eye . Matching numbers , clean bore with well defined rifling and blonde colored stocks with very few dings ..asking $225
I know very little about these rifles and wondered if some of you could tell me abit about them and the price .
Thx ...T

Nice sounding.

Get it.

Do you know how to read the disc?

There are a number of numbers on it, one is an indication of the bore diametre at last inspection and the other has a little triangle stamped over the 1, 2 or 3 or no stamp at all. 1 means excellent, 2, medium and 3 poor, but many shooters report good results even with a '3' bore.

There is a web site somewhere explaining this.

Google Swede Mausers to find it.

I got one years ago mail order (a 1911) for $49.99 and it is one of my favourite rifles.

I regret not getting an m38 the next year when they had them on for $79.99, but it just wasn't in my budget at the time.

Finally got one for $100 or $125 at a gun show a few years ago but sadly it is one of the few Swedes that does not shoot very well.

It has a '3' bore, but I took a chance and bought it anyway.

No matter what the disk says, pull the bolt and check out the bore. The disk records the last look from the armorer, and that could have been 10 owners ago.

Sounds like a lemon. Better pass on the name of the store and let me take the hit for you. You'll sleep better at night. Trust me  .

Here's some info.
1896 Swede
Surplus Rifle

(E) 8)

Go get it. I paid more for mine, in about the same condition. At that price, its worth it.

You still reading this? I said go get it. NOW!!!

Swedes are not boring, dey yust do boring tings. BBC quote.

To follow that, if you are a halfway decent shot, the 6.5 Swede riifle will obliterate the center ot the target. BORING.

Add to that, light recoil, impeccable workmanship. I own five.

here's some picts of my M96

they are beautiful aren't they,as a side note-with PMC 144 GR FMJ ammo it will punch thru 1/2 plate steel but you have to hit the same hole twice.
i also have an exploded casing, part bloke on the bolt, when i hit the handle to open the bolt the firing pin moved just enough to hit the primer-BANG-action was half open

6.5 excellent rifles and carbines.I have two and there accuracy is excellent and for 225 you's did good.no problem taking down moose at acouple hundred yards.

Anyone know if Boyds makes a replacement stock for the swede? Looked on their web site and couldn't find one. May have to get one from Numrich?
They have thumbhole stocks..not sure if they have OEM style. I'm getting a thumbhole for mine. It has a bubba'd original and it's very awkward for me to get a good grip on it with my strong hand.
This is going to be a yote gun and I want it comfortable..incase the coyotes don't come any closer then 300-400 yards..:D
Here's my Carl G.

I was thinking of Getting A boyds Target Varminter stock for my M-96 as they make it for large and small ring mausers. I already have JRS classic on a Savage and they are very nice also.

One of my New Year's resolutions is to buy a nice Swede 6.5x55. What a great calibre! Nice buy, Timberlord!
Kept my New Year's resolution and bought a Swede Mauser! ;)
Similar to yours, Timberlord. Mine's dated 1920 and all numbers match except the bayonette mount, plus I didn't get a bayo. Serial # 484###.
I did some reading on Surplusrifle and found out that these are rebuilds which started in 1941, based on the brass disc in the buttstock...?
Can somebody shed some light on that? There's not a ton of info on Surplusrifle (for a change!)...
(And, I paid a bit more than you did, Timberlord!)
I can't wait to shoot this puppy!
;)

I've got a 1903 M96 that I cut down the barrel and installed a Timney trigger in. Its a great shooter and will consistently hit bowling pins at 300 yards. I just got the old gal back after having sold it but put in first dibs on any future resale and have many boxes of Norma match grade ammo that I bought from a retiring shooter a number of years ago. I also reload for hunting, although I haven't used the gun for that in years. With a good scope and mounts its pretty hard to top the accuracy of these old jewels.
