I was looking through the Higginson powder web site and found "new Swedish brass". It is half the price of winchester brass. Has anyone tried this brass?
i have used the 8mm brass 8 times with somewhat heavy loads and the brass has not burst on me yet. it is worth buying as the brass is excellent quality.
The Swedish brass is a bit heavier (like military brass) and so has less internal capacity than some other brands. My Swedish 30/06 brass weighs about 205 grs with primer and the Winchester I have weighs about 190 grs primed. I guess that's why Higginsons suggests using 5% less powder. Remington is in-between (about 200 grs), except for the Nickel-plated Rem brass which weighs about 205 grs.
Internal capacity of brass is just one of many factors that contribute to chamber pressure. Brass between manufacturers (e.g. Federal, Winchester, Remington, Norma, Lapua, Privi, Military, etc.) differs, there are even differences between lots from the same manufacturer. Different rifles have different chamber sizes, throat lengths and magazine lengths. Primers vary in strength ("heat"). The same powder varies by Lot #. Pressure increases when temperature increases. Load manuals disagree. So what exactly is "the safe" load? Do you know the safe pressure limit for your gun? How does a home reloader determine the pressure of a given load?
I have a chrony, and when I use this brass, I stop adding powder when the MV reaches the same level as it did with the other brass I was using. Even if you go "balls to the wall" (using max published loads) with all your loads, using this brass will not turn your gun into a hand grenade.
Wasnt' worried safety wise, just didnt' want have to have work up loads again. I have some Gevelot Brass for 8x57 and its also a little heavier, Ive been able to work up to max without issues.
I think Ill try some of this swedish stuff after all.
I purchased a PILE (1000) Peices of "Swede" 308 Win Brass from Higgensons a few weeks ago. I don't recall the exact weights, but the swede brass weighs exactly the same as my Lapua brass. The primer pockets are very uniform and the flash holes appear to have been drilled. There is no burr on the inside of the case. The only downside of this brass is that less than shiny and clean. There is a little bit of green in the rims but the brass came out very nice and clean after a wash and about 6 hours in the tumbler.
The other question about this brass is its true origin. The headstamp "Gevelot" may or may not be swede. A quick Google search suggests that Gevelot may actually be of French or Canadian origin.
Some yrs ago I bought a bunch of .303 brass from Tom Higginson. It was headstamped "Herters",made by Sako for them according to Tom.It is excellent, heavy brass and I've used some of it for up to 7 firings so far (with necksizing).I also bought a bunch for the 7x57 mauser.
