The good news is that it has not been drilled and tapped, so it could be restored. If the barrel is shiny, then about $200 as is. Trade-ex sold quite a few and they ran from $150 - $250 in about the same condition.

What is the date on the receiver? It could add a bit of value.

Judging by the length, it's probably what is usually referred to as an M96-38, which is a surplus M96 that was re-barelled for infantry use sometime around 1938. A lot of those ended up sporterized for the civilian market in North America in the 50s and 60s. Worth a bit less than a full-length M96.

from the picture it looks like there is 1/2 inch missing.

a close picture would help to clarfy this...

It is possible that this rifle was converted from a m/96 to the m/38 pattern short rifle. Many of these had the end of the barrel threaded for the Blank Firing Adapter so they could be used for training. People did not understand the threaded "Type B" barrel and had the threads cut off and the barrel recrowned. Some Importers and Dealers did this too, as the rifles looked "right" and sold better.

However, I think a $80 estimate is quite low. A complete bolt alone should bring $75 on the EE or maybe more on E-bay. Then there are the other parts, and possibly a good barrel. Trade-Ex sells sporterized rifles made from m/96 type rifles in the average of $150 - $250 range, and at the top end, you can buy Commercial Husqvarna made m/96 type sporting rifles that are factory made sporters and not converted military rifles.

If you shop the Trade-Ex website carefully for a hunting rifle, you can find them with scope mounts, drilled and tapped, bent bolts, side safeties, and other "add ons" that make them excellent choices for hunting.
