Swedish Mauser M96/38 - taller foresight needed....

Just fitted a Wehrmann precision backsight to my M96/38, BTW - PM me if you want to see it.

A pal of mine has one on his M96, and it's a lot different from any of the Swedish models as it simply locates on the takdown latch, held in place by a slightly longer securing screw, instead of needing a D&T. I had to turn up a 1mm collar to act as a spacer, but it has turned out fine.

Needless to say, it cost a small fortune.... :=(

Hey, Tac. I found your other thread on a seperate board regarding your Wehrmann. That really is a pretty piece of kit!

Are they still in production, or are they all vintage?

Well, Dad - in all the years of shooting all over Yoorup I've only seen two of them - one on Dave's M96 earlier this year, and mine. He bought it from a dealer at the Trafalgar Meeting at Bisley about three weeks ago. THAT dealer had one more, but it was on his own K98, for which all the Wehrmann accessories had really been made, so it's a lucky flawk that it also fits the M96, although not surprising - they are all Mausers. I really wanted one, and took the price with equanimity - even though it was substantially north of $200.

I suppect, given the style of script and the fact that the original intention was to spiff-up the sights of German K98s that we are looking at the inter-war years for production - I'm happy to be proven wrong, though.

Just as a matter of interest -

a. What was the other site you saw it on, and

b. can you copy and paste the images on here?

TAC, both the M/94 derivative and the M/98 share the same basic dimensions when it comes to the rear bridge so it would fit both.

Well, as I understand it, it is more of a sight alignment device than a plain ol' sight. Looking through it [the aperture is very small, but can be reamed out with a watchmaker's reamer], I see the previously fuzzy foresight in perfect clarity superimposed on the target. The actual issue backsight on the rifle remains in position meanwhile. If I had a tunnel foresight then I would remove the intermediate issue backsight and use the new set-up as a standard diopter sight system.

I tried it out yesterday afternoon and it worked fine - closing my groups down to about 1.5" from 2.5" @100m with my handloads. Obviously there is much room for improvement, albeit not with me, I'm kind of old and cranky.
