Hi all. I have a 1917 Swedish mauser, matching numbers on the receiver and bolt, but the bolt is a bent bolt. I have noticed that all the photos I have seen are straight bolts. It works out for me as I may be scoping this rifle (not by choice really, eyes are getting crappier), but I was wondering what version I may have. Was there a sniper version? Thanks!

Photographs are everything when attempting to find out information on a firearm.

An original m/96 Swedish Mauser should have a straight bolt and about a 29 inch barrel. A m/94 Carbine has a bent bolt with about an 18 inch barrel.

Some of the original m/96 rifles were converted to the m/38 short rifle pattern, with about a 24 inch barrel. Early conversions used a straight bolt handle, but as Husqvarna was already using a bent bolt handle on their commercial rifles, permission was given to use the bent bolt handle on later conversions.

These converted rifles can be any year from 1898 to 1925.

Sorry about the photobucket thing, have to figure out how I did it before. The barrel length seems wrong for the short rifle conversion, it seems to be 28.5 inches. When I look at it the bolt looks as it would if I took a torch and heated it, without the discoloration? Could that have been polished out? Maybe it wasn't factory?????
