swedish mauser sight question

Sikte is a purpose-made steel sight that ranges from 100m to 800m. They are well-made and replace the original rear sight leaf entirely. According to Crown Jewels, the Swedish military was going to convert all M96's to the Sikte sight, but it proved too expensive and they issued the cheaper Vasteraas sights instead as rifles were issued out for training or to shooting clubs. Leter, the clubs were authorized to install diopter sights under strict conditions and many are thus modified.

The advantage to the vasteraas sight is you likely will retain the matching serialized original rear leaf sight, but many (most) Vasteraas inserts only go down to 250m. The Sikte sight is better mad an more practical to use in all circumstances, but the original matching ladder was forfeited in Sweden before the rifles came over.

I should also mention, the military versions of the Vasteraas (Type I goes down to 300m, type II to 250) are calibrated for M41 Torped ammunition in an M38 length barrel. The Civilian Vasteraas that goes down to 100m is calibrated for M41 Torped ammunition in an M96 length barrel. There is no M38 vasteraas sight properly calibrated to 100m, but the new-made Husqvarna M38 rifles had a factory ladder sight marked "T" for "Torped" that went as low as 100m.

When you use a 100m Vasteraas sight on an M96 in the civilian shooting club manner, a taller front sight may need to be fitted to get it to zero. Not all rifles with the insert got the proper front sight after all the swapping around that happened since the rifles were surplused.
