I was looking at getting a Swedish Mauser but I don't know whether to get an M96 or an M38. I would get both if I could but that is not an option right now. I know it is hard to go wrong with either on but how do they stack up in terms of performance. I would like to make it my deer gun.

They are literally the same rifle for the mostpart aside from barrel length :)

For hunting, I prefer a shorter barrel, and 23" is still plenty of barrel by no means short changed. Also, the M38 has a bent bolt like modern rifles, easier to work.

Now, there's something to be said for a "long" rifle too, classic, but heavy and ungainly as well as you intend to hunt with it. When marching around after game I appreciate a lighter and smaller rifle for sure.

(Great hunting cal by the way  )

But then again, I'm selling an M38, so I'm a hair biased likely. :p
