Today I thought I would go out for what is likely to be my last gopher day of this year. They simply seem to start hibernating this time of year and it is hardly worth the hour drive. I had promised the farmer I would come and shoot in his pen/corral where he keeps his calves. It is very close to his house, yard and equipment.

So I knew the 17 HM2 is what I would use because it does not ricochet very often. So I loaded it up along with my 17 HMR, 17 WSM and 17 Hornet.

Most of the shooting was as I suspected and I ended up shooting 55 with the HM2. I then moved to another pasture of his and shot 3 with my 17 Hornet and was about to pack up and go home. But wait... I forgot about my 2 other 17s. So I decided to stick around and shoot a couple more with my HMR and WSM. So I shot 2 with each.

Total for the day was only 62. But not bad. Shots ranged from 25 to only as far as 105 yards. Nothing spectacular but what the hey. Only down side I realized when I got home I forgot my 17 Fireball. So the entire family was not out. Next year.

Now I need to find a 17 Rem!

That sounds like a lot of fun

Tell me more about 17 hornet, I've been wanting one for a while but can't justify it since I already have a 223

Love the Hornet. One of my favourite gopher guns. It is in my mind a 200 yards gun. I have trouble getting shots further than 150 yards maybe out to 200 where I shoot. Quiet and deadly. Makes a mess of em!

As for justification to get one. Cheap to load, accurate and you don't have one.

If that does work try: you know a guy who has the above listed 17s, plus 1-22 Hornet, 2-223, 2-204, 1-22-250. A bunch of Rimfires and who knows what else. I think that should work?

That should work. Can never really have enough right?

Good point

I'm already loading for my 223 which I use out to 300-400 yards. I have a 17HMR for anything 200 yards or closer. 17 Hornet is a cool caliber but I'm not sure I can find a practical application for it, given the 2 other rifles can get the job done.

I might get one anyway just because I don't own a gun in that caliber :p

What glass are you running on your 17 Hornet?

4444 I currently have a Bushnell 4200 6-24x42 on it. I did have a Vortex 6-18x44 on it before but needed to move it on a 204.

Steve always happy to return the favour. Yes you were the cause of my WSM purchase. But happy that you made me see the light.
