Hi Everyone,

I wanted to find out for myself if it really was possible to order directly from SWFA, and if so, what the details were. In short, I ordered a SWFA SS 6X42 Mil-Quad scope on Friday and it arrived at my house today, which is Wednesday! So the shipping was very fast and the process was easy.

Apparently they just started exporting SWFA SS scopes to Canada, here are the details:
  • at this time, they can only export SWFA SS series scopes, but this includes ALL of the Classic and HD models. I notice that there are some FFP models in both the classic and HD lines.
  • you have to call them on the phone to place the order
  • they can only accept (FRAUD ALERT) for payment as they can only accept credit cards with an American mailing address at this time. Who know's maybe they'll change this in the future.
  • when I called them to place the order, they gave me the email address to send the (FRAUD ALERT) payment to. Immediately after I sent the money I gave the sales person a call to confirm that they received the payment. She got it right away and told me that that she would package up the scope right away and send it out.
  • when I received the parcel, it was obvious by the customs tape that it had been opened, which is good, because this confirms that that Customs inspected it and everything was done right.

The total cost for the scope, Butler Creek scope covers and shipping(which apparently includes Duty) was $374USD. I checked my bank account and the $374USD converted to $482CND. When the parcel was delivered to my house there was another fee of $58.

Therefore, the total cost for the scope and butler creek scope covers was $540CAD to my doorstep. If you were to order the scope without the scope covers, the cost would probably be about $515

Thanks for the heads up. Looks cool! Looking forward to a range review. :)
I might do a full range report. For now I can give you a few of my quick observations:
  • The scope body is VERY solid/heavy duty IMO, and I'm used to Nightforce scopes
  • I have used SWFA scopes before and can verify that they track perfectly with the correct dope
  • I like the mil-quad reticle, its a great design
  • The Turrets have nice positive tactile clicks
  • The glass is decent, not equivalent to a Nightforce, but decent
  • There are a lot of reviews on these scopes on Youtube
One interesting thing about SWFA scopes is that they are only sold directly from SWFA, its like factory direct pricing, there are no other retailers for these optics anywhere period. Apparently according to SWFA, if these scopes were to go through the regular retail channels, they would sell in the $800-$900 USD range. Until just a few weeks ago SWFA did not export these scopes at all, which is why they were not available in Canada and so the only option was to pay big money for them on the EE, if you were lucky enough to scoop one.

Rex, who is a known and unrepentant optics snob, loves the SWFA SS 10X. Here are a few of his reviews and comments that are worth the time to watch:

I hope they will ship U.S.P.S. international airmail like Brownells does.
That would be great if they did, but they don't..
Would be cheaper on the shipping but UPS brokerage fee isn't the horrid at $10.00 + .50 GST on the brokerage fee..

UPS is the only way they ship at this time..

I think I was one of their test cases for Canada shipping in December. There were a couple of glitches but their retail manager Kody got it sorted out to my satisfaction. They seemed like a good group.

The government doesn't charge taxes on goods bought internationally. If he had bought it in his home province then yes but since it came from the US he would not have paid Canadian taxes on it.

Sounds like the GST and PST in BC (5% and 7%).

12% of $482 (CDN) = $57.84....

Government has to get their cut :)

Every time I buy something from the USA and have it shipped to a border town, I drive down and pick it up. Upon re-entering Canada I am charged provincial tax and GST.

Thats because you're declaring it as you cross back into Canada and over your limit.

When shipping stuff to Canada, it is hit or miss if you get charged for taxes.
