Are the Swiss arms that are available to us here available in 7.62x39? I've read on there site they were just not sure if in Canada! Thanks

They weren't available in 762x39 last time they were legally available - who knows what we'll get IF anyone commits to bringing them in again - I believe MD Charlton is the 'current' importer.

No because they were a " variant " of an evil puppy slayer. The SIGS in the states are available in 7.62X39. Different rifles than we have here. Modular like ARs.

I'm guessing he is talking about the Swiss website, they do indeed have a 553r chambered in 7.62 and takes ak mags, which I think is different from the 556x or whatever the US version is called. Though I'm not sure if those would be offered here as a Swiss Arms Classic Russian kind of thing. That would be pretty cool.

I wonder considering the upper is the registered part if we could import 7.62 x39 lowers, get all the bolts, barrels etc... and have a smith put it together for us.
Then we could have a 7.62x39 SAN that readily takes AK mags

With the swiss arms being a named variant of the sig 550 and retaining it's NR status, there is a case to be made to have all other named sig 550 variants fall under that same classification

Not really. Just like variants of the Valmet M78 and Hunter are a no go.

The Swiss Arms and cz858 will likely be exceptions to the rule, not the rule themselves. The rest of the 550 series will likely remain prohib via Liberal Order in Council. The Swiss and 858 models previously prohibited by reclassification will be named non-restricted and restricted depending on barrel length and overall length. Unless they throw in the word "variant", other Sig variants won't be coming non-prohibited by name.

That being said, bfiles is on the right track. Same uppers, but different barrels and lowers would work.

the valmet never had the classification reversed like the swiss so there is a case to be made as ths is the first time this has happened.

The swiss arms liniage is still a named variant of a prohibited firearm according to the RCMP SFSS, those NR versions of the valmet were never named as a prohibited variant of the AK hence how they remained NR

Hmm... Unless it is the CQB variant, I would not want to "waste" a Swiss with the x39 calibre. It seems to me, the transformation of a well machined piece into a glorified rock lobbed.

Now, 6.5 Grendel in either the carbine (or most especially) the full sized rifle... now that would be the bees - knees ;)

Specific models of the swiss and CZ858 will be named "unprohib". Not specific models "and their variants". In essence they will be exceptions to the prohibition of converted autos (858s) and the 550 named prohib variants (swiss).

Just like the hunter and m78 are named as exceptions to the ak lost of prohibs and variants.

Guaranteed.

You want any other type of 550 series gun other than the specific models named, and you will have to reverse the original oic that prohibited them.

The 550 and variants will remain prohibited by name.

I thought about this almost 3 years ago. I was about to pull the trigger, obtain a stripped SAN receiver, get Irunguns to import a Sig Sauer 556r with everything except the stripped upper, and get Herron arms to make a custom NR length 7.62x39 barrel, when the rifles went prohib. I'm still considering doing this project, and if there is interest, I could maybe get 2 done...

I am interested

My estimates are around $3500-$4000 for a price tag. It would be mostly U.S. 556R parts, with the Swiss receiver and custom barrel. This is of course subject to availability and cost of Swiss receivers, ability to get all the required parts in to Canada, and compatibility of Swiss Arms/556R parts (additional gunsmithing may be required). If truly interested, I can start sourcing parts and get a better idea of what everything will cost when it's all said and done.

I'll also add that my plan would be to have NR flat top carbines made.

Swiss military arms manufacturer SAN Swiss Arms AG, maker of the SG 550 rifles, has laid off half their workforce. Swiss Arms AG is owned by the German company L & O Holding which also owns SIG Sauer, Sauer & Sohn, Mauser and Blaser.

Tagesanzeiger.ch reports (Google-translated from German) …

“Approximately every second of the total 34 employees was terminated at the end of January from the company SAN Swiss Arms. This was confirmed by the manufacturer of the Swiss assault rifle into the program “ECO” on Swiss television . Swiss Arms produced in Neuhausen Rhine Falls (SH) as the successor company of SIG, the weapon with which the Swiss army is equipped.

The production order of 450,000 assault rifles for the army, however, was done long ago. Today, especially national and international police forces and sport shooters prefer the rifle. And here is broken, according to Swiss Arms demand. Also, because the production costs in Switzerland compared with other countries are higher. Therefore, saw the company forced to make drastic austerity measures. Whether the production of the assault rifle is endangered or would just be transferred abroad, she did not say against “ECO” however.”

A new price list from the company, dated 1 February 2014, shows significant price increases (3,460 Swiss franc is $4660.23 cdn).

Lol, I was just about to send Ian an email about this but if you are going to go ahead with it, I'll just toss you cash to get 2 or more done. I'm sure others would sell quick if you were too
