hello,

I have recently fallen in love with these rifles... I love how "complete" they come...sling mounts, rear drum sight adjustable for yardage, built in bi-pod, ect. And the quality seems to be second to none. Now my question is..how is the build in bipod? If you shoot prone a lot...is it good? I know it will put different pressure on then gun when deployed but how much will it shift your POI compared to shooting without it...say on a bag on off the mag?

Any other info you care to share on these? I know they are $$$ but they seem to be worth it!!! :)

The bipod is useless, POI shifts quite a bit, and it's either too high, too low and generally not very robust.

I recommend using a backpack or a sandbag as a rest.

Pretty flimsy. Just remove it, you get a better grip on the handguard anyway. Shoot off a bag.

I feel the POI shift is blown a bit out of proportion, but recently even I (a long time supporter of the Swiss Bi pod)have come around and reluctantly admit to having it happen. Never as much as some report, but it does happen. Most people remove the bi-pod all together. If your going to use it, just don't lean forward onto the rifle putting excessive downward pressure on the fore stock, and don't plan on using it for precision work.

It does work good if all you ever plan on using it for is to prop the rifle up when you put it down on the ground.

I have also tried to work with the bipod in the past and kept getting inconsistent results. I have removed the bipod for good and shoot it off the mag (there is no movement;))and sometimes supported at the rear of the handguard.

As the rifle is not free floated, pressure on the barrel will affect POI. I prefer to have nothing touching it forward of the first 5 inches of the handguard. The Swiss Arms barrel is tapered along its entire length beneath the handguard, thickest portion being at the rear.

I shoot a lot of gophers with mine. I hit a gong at 850 yards earlier this year, but could only do it once. It was a big gong mind you and I was never able to duplicate the shot, but I was super pumped regardless.

All in all a great reliable rifle. A tad heavy with all the goodies on it, but it always works and eats all types of ammo. Mine is on my "never sell" list!
 
How big was the gong? I'm just wondering, because that's a long distance, even if it was 24". As for me, I can regularly hit a 13" gong at 550 yards. Lots of fun for sure.
 
Shooting at mansized targets out to 600m is no problem with a 551LB (18" bbl), 770m/850 yards sounds like a lucky shot, though.

I have myself hit targets out to 450m with a 553LB (14" bbl) without problems.

Bipods are useless ... shoot from a bag like others said. Awesome and fun doesn't begin to describe these rifles ... they are solid build, accurate, heavy but balanced ... I've used mine in summer and in winter -40 and never had a misfire.(knock on wood) If you purchase one you will NOT be disappointed. I stole mine for the price I bought it and it's on the NO SALE list of rifles I own. Good luck and enjoy,

Took mine out today.... With this thread in mind I fired some shots at the 12" metal plate at 200 yards using the bipod.

I was carefull not to " load" the bipod in any direction.

My buddy and I were hitting that plate easily with the bipod. That's as far as our range goes at the moment.

So it was good enough for that, at least.

I doubt I'll use it much anyhow - it always seems like the wrong height.
