Well I just purchased a fairly unique? SG 551 from Elwood Epps. It's got a 454mm (17.9") barrel, adjustable sights with tritium inserts, and a winter trigger guard. Incuded are the hardshell case, two mags and cleaning kit - standard stuff. Most of the other carbines I've seen have the 363mm (14.3") barrel or are the SG 551 LB (internet pics) which has a flat top/rail and flip-up sights.

Anyone else shooting this same gun?

I'm a Swiss Arms noob and can't believe I spent the cash without even laying a finger on the gun . I really miss my AR's and I blame koalorka and his fabulous pictures posted on page 23 (Swiss Arms photo gallery) for pushing me over the edge and into the realm of SG 551 goodness :D. The price couldn't be beat though. $2800 compared the $3400 for the latest shipment of Swiss guns.

Should be here in 3 days :dancingbanana:! What flavour ammo do these guns like to digest?

Don't worry man, those rifles put the ARs to shame. You'll thank yourself once you take it to the range and get the permanent grin everyone does.

The 17.9" carbine has a nice balance and enough barrel length to give good velocity. Actual length of 'barrel' on that is only about 16", just as the 14.3" actually has a barrel about 12.5".

With the optics rail in place you'll need a cheek piece to get proper cheek weld.

What about the winter trigger guard? Supposivily is pivots out of the way to facilitate the use of heavy gloves. I've been looking at a tonne of pictures, all seem to have fixed trigger guards?

I'm not sure about the Carbine and CQB model, but I know for sure that the fullzise models have the winter trigger guards.

i wasnt aware that any were brought in with irons, I thought they all had rails...nice score...probably one of last ones in canada at that price

I received my classic green carbine from Epps the other day. I was expecting the LB version of the gun as listed on their website, but the regular version showed up. Now that I've got it in my hands, I'm glad that it's the short one. Missing from the case was the operation manual and test target.

I took it to the range yesterday, -30 with the wind chill here in Winnipeg, and put 60 rounds through it. Function was flawless and it was just about perfectly sighted in from the factory. Absolutely love the sights on the gun. Ringing my 8" gong at 200yds was no problem at all. The gun may need some fine tuning, as one click of the rear sight moves the POI to far from the right to left. I'll wait for some warmer weather to suss it out.

I was expecting the carbine to be similar to my AR's (which I sold a while back), boy was I wrong. There really is no comparison between them. The Swiss guns are all business and no Barbie. Build like a tank and with the precision of a fine watch. I can't wait till my next range visit .

Pictures to follow as soon as I fix the connection problem with my home PC.
