Technical drawing Sunday: the 6-round GP 11 charger clip
Whilst perusing the Federal Archives, I stumbled across this magnificent drawing dated October 1914. These show the later version of the charger with the reinforcing ribs and angled thumb groove (modified in 1913).
This beautifully shows the complexity of such a simple-looking object...
Some observations:
The sheet steel reinforcing plate embedded on the front spine of the charger, providing much needed rigidity
The tight tolerances which must have required sophisticated machinery and tooling
The positive cartridge shoulder support and wide front clearance, which prevent the bullet tips from scraping into the front inside edge, thus guaranteeing smooth operation.
I would love to know more about the material specifications of the charger, what sort of tooling and procedures they used, and the QC process. So much to find out! Would be cool to make new production ones...
