Switching from 590 to an 870?

A couple things aren't working for me with my 590.

First, the ghost rings are bottomed out so my sights are off at 50 yards with slugs. I think I might be able to fix this by swapping out the front sight, but haven't gotten around to that yet.

And secondly (really the more bothering one) is that it's only a cylinder bore choke, so it isn't producing tight enough groups for some of the action shooting I do, especially with clays involved.

What do you all think a tactical 870 would run for, something like:

18"-20" barrel, 3" chamber
8-9 shot capacity at least
Pistol grip stock and side saddle
Ghost rings

Lemme know what you all think..

I love my new 870 police mag. If you want the higher capacity you will need the 20" tube on it.

My 18.5 has a cylinder fixed choke and really decent groups at 50 yards with whatever kind of slugs I throw at it.

It's coming in the bush with me this fall for the shotgun hunt.

You should be able to get decent money for you 590. Upgrade, you won't be sorry.

The 590 is a good gun. Have you tried different brands of slugs in it? Perhaps there's a simple fix with the GRS. Or you can try a red dot/reflex sight/or aftermarket GRS to see if it works.

The gun is worth the effort to get the sights fixed.

I really prefer to shoot the low recoil slugs (feel free to make your jokes :p) so swapping out ammo is something I'm not really looking at....And I'd still be stuck with a gun without a choke.

I may not sell the 590, might just get an 870 in addition to it.

My 18.5" 870 are 6+1 for 2 3/4'' and 5+1 for 3" (though I can pop in a 2 3/4 for 6). The mag tube is just a c unt hair shy of 7 2 3/4" or 6 3". Pretty frustrating honestly. I don't know how Mossberg manages 8+1 in a 20" tube.

Just get the barrel threaded for choke tubes. $50 at Reliable Gun in Vancouver. You can then tune it to whatever load you want from Skeet to slugs or whatever.

I sold my 590A1 too cheap and bought an 870 police (thinkin I was going to upgrade) well I sold the 870 and im looking for another 590! If you can swing it, keep the 590 untill you try out the 870, because you never know, you might not like it as much!

I did the reverse. I have an 870 and just bought a 590 A1 SPX. I decided to keep both. I don't understand the action shooting problem? Your boys cleaned up at the Napanee shoot with 590s? :p

When I switched from a 590 to an 870, the only thing that I really noticed (or took some time to get used to) were the pump release switch and the safety... As for the operation, fit and finish and feel, they are pretty much the same thing in my mind.... I prefer the setup of the 590, but I wanted the 14" barrel I could get with the 870.
