Hi, I'm a total noob to gun smithing, but I wanna learn. :)

Anyways. I'm planning on getting a 10/22 in the near future. However, I'd like to switch from the regular stock, to one of the thumbhole stocks. I'm just wondering how complicated it is. Do I just undo the screws, pull the barrel and action out and drop them into the new stock? Or is there more complicated procedures invlolved in bedding etc?

Unscrew the one screw under the receiver. Remove receiver from stock, place into new stock, replace screw. :D

Get a hex bolt for the action and a bolt buffer while you're at it.

awesome thanks guys. oh, how about switching barrels? do i just unscrew the stock one, and thread on a new one? i don't really wanna keep the stock barrel on there. I'd like a better one. any suggestions? i'll be doing target shooting and small game hunting.

You just have to remove the two hex bolts on the V-block holding the barrel the the receiver. BE CAREFUL: the V-notch in the barrel is razor sharp. When replacing the hex bolts, tighten them evenly. ie one turn on this one, one turn on that one.

As for barrels, I have had good results with my Butler creek barrel (feather weight). Green mountain, tactical solutions, VQ and clerke make good barrels. A good balance for target and hunting would be a heavy fluted 16" barrel. You'll need a "bull barrel" or target stock (barrel inlay size) for a target/bull barrel.

DON'T forget to put the safety in the middle, if you don't it will catch on the stock and do damage, it's not much of an issue on an OEM stock but if you should ever need to take the action out of the new stock, you'll be ticked if you damage it.

Another tip when installing the new barrel is to put a little BLUE loctite on the barrel stub and the set screws.

Have a look at www.rimfirecentral.com lots of cheap tricks you can do to a 10-22, I've used them and not had any trouble.
