This afternoon I dug a nice SWP 45 Mod 98 rifle out of the pile and went out to my buddy's range and dusted a few clips of Yugo surplus out of it.
It is quite nice to shoot and is in very good condition. Nothing matches anything, and I suspect it has seen a refurb along the path to my house. The bluing is nice, the stock is in good condition without the usual dings and scratches.
It has a sight hood, but no bolt disassembly socket. Lock screws are present. The front band is of the stamped variety with a weld to hold it together. There is a cupped butt plate with the number "43" stamped on it.
While I was cleaning it back at my shop, I did some looking on my information files that I have on OneNote. The bolt is a bit of a mystery. It does not match serial with the action. It has the round gas escape holes consistent with the ones shown in the pics below, but it has a bolt guide. Does this rule out that the bolt is a Kriegsmodell?
Or were there some bolts with round gas escape hole and a bolt guide. I guess there must have been, because this is one in my rifle. The serial on the action is 88883 with an "a" under it. The action has the proper "63 63" on the right side. In the top of the receiver ring there is stamped clearly "Mod 98" closest to the barrel, and "SWP 45" at the rear, again, clearly.
Sorry I have no pics right at the moment, as the rifle is down at my shop and I am at home. I guess the point of the posting is to point out that info provided is not always correct or complete. I will post pics when I get the chance.
Feel free to comment.
