I've been looking at the usual suspects like 870/590A1 but a buddy who has more experience with shotties is kicking himself in the butt for not getting a Black Shadow instead of his 870 before moving to a country with insane firearm pricing. On paper, this shotgun looks good and would save me a few bucks over a Super Nova. However, I'm not reading about people using it for action shooting. Is there a reason for it? Slower to load or cycle? Reliability issues? Any reason why this wouldn't be at least on the par with the 870/5xx's? Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance to everyone chiming in!

On a side-note, I noticed it's significantly lighter than the Super Nova, so recoil could be a factor, but other than that....?

Posting to bump the thread, as I too am considering an SXP. From what I've read/discussed with friends the recoil assisted pump system is similar to the old Winnie 1300s and should make this a wicked quick gun to run.

Love to hear from anyone who's shot one. Thoughts/impressions?

I own a winchester sxp defender, it is a superb shotgun! The action is smooth as butter and I have yet to have any failures at all. These guns can't be beat for the price point, the biggest downside to these guns is that they have little aftermarket support. If you are on the fence about this gun I say go for it! I just ordered a s and j hardware side saddle for mine and I plan on painting it! Great shotguns with the best actions out there!

Every time I am on a trap range and I see someone battling with a misbehaving 870 I like mine even more.

At one time they had a 3 barrel combo deal - a 28" and an 18.5" and I believe a rifled barrel. This combo deal has a longer factory mag tube in order to get all of the barrels to fit correctly. Just by eyeballing, the magazine looks at least 3" longer than the SXP that doesn't come in the combo deal. Don't know if the combo is around but even without it, I think it is a great value.

If you're used to shooting other pump action shotguns, it will probably take a while to get used to the SXP. Good thing 12 gauge ammo is cheap! After a bit of practice, you'll wonder how you ever operated a normal pump. The inertial assist pump is an absolute dream once you're used to the motion.
