I have been looking at SXS 12 gauge recently...always liked the look and feel of a SXS, rather that an O/U.

The SXS would mainly be for grouse, however the area I hunt deer is shotgun only and would like to know how other members SXS's work in regards to accuracy with slugs.

Please let me know what SXS you have as like I said, I am in the market.

Thanks

I like your style. SxS slug guns have always intrigued me as well. Someday, I may get one.

The Beretta 471 Silver Hawk Slug is one such gun that I have lusted over for a while, but alas have never been imported into Canada. What a beauty:

Forgive the newbie question but does the fact that a lot of the SxS's have fixed chokes play a part in how this will work out? For example the one I recently got has the barrels machined as full on one side and improved on the other.

If you are concerned about the full chokes and the use of slugs, here is an excerpt from the Brenneke Worth-to-Know page:
Chokes
Brenneke slugs (with the exception of the “Gold” and “SuperSabot” cartridges) are suitable for all types of chokes. Even a tight full choke is not a problem. The Brenneke design with angular ribs is not to create spin, but to ensure problem-free choke passage.

I believe this is true for any slugs with "ribs".
Do your own research if any doubts.

And here I thought that those ribs were a sort of "rifling" substitute. More knowledge learned. Thanks.

Sorry for the slight diversion. We can go back to the slug gun SxS's now.

And speaking of which I have to say that Beretta Silver Hawk is sure a sweet looking beast.

Shooting slugs:

I think the biggest trick when it comes to "accuracy" with slugs is how your barrels regulate. Most SxS barrel trajectories tend to cross at some point, so you need to figure out where that is to figure out decent accuracy.

Also, you have to decide what you want to shoot. If you want to shoot factory slugs, it's really easy. Just go buy some from your local sporting goods store, and blast away. If you want to reload them or find specialized ones, it gets trickier.

Right now my shotgun is a SxS Lanber with 3" chambers that I rigged up to be purely a slug gun. It has express sights on it, a BIG thick limbsaver pad on it, and so far it works pretty well. I'm currently developing a new slug load for it, so will report back as to how that turns out.

The sights are "borrowed" from a couple different rifles I have. The front sight is off a No. 4 enfield, and the rear sight is of of a new Marlin. I took a file to it to make it an express sight contour.

Many thanks. For sometime, I've been thinking of doing something similar with my SPR220 coachgun - my thoughts had been to use something like a folding single leaf (Marbles type?).

Sweet! That makes me want one just because...:D

How does it shoot with the stuff you have tried so far? That would be by far the best looking gun in the forest during shotgun deer season.

A folding leaf sight would be a really good idea, as you could flip it down if you wanted to do some bird shotgunning or what not.

As for how it shoots, no idea so far. I've been working on a new slug idea that I have, so as such have focused on that, rather than dicking around with foster or brenneke slugs. I will be getting her out this weekend to see how it works with my new slugs though, and might buy a box of fosters just for ####s and giggles.

I had a friend that purchased an old Greener 12ga that was basically just the action as the barrels were completely destroyed. He had 12ga rifled barrels put together on it with express style sights and it was a beauty.
Great for Ottawa Valley shotgun only area.
