i am interested in getting a SXS skeet and trap gun.

i know nothing about it. i am thinking a 28", full choke, etc.

i know choke is to conrtol the shots into tighter group, but what is full choke? can the choke be taken out from the barrel? what is the shortest, but yet effective barrel length for skeet and trap?

my budget is around $500...

thanks!

side by sides generally have fixed (integral) chokes, usually full on one barrel and modified on the other.

i disagree with the 'effective ranges' posted here, but itll give you a rough idea of the chokes. there are others as well such as extra full turkey chokes, etc.

Nice. I agree with you about the effective range idea. The sxs left barrel is full and the right modified.I'm posting here for the original poster as well. Yes the choke can be reduced. One of the best sxs's for clays is the browning, as well as many others, can't offend anyone here. But to buy a clay gun like a browning sxs for $500.00 is hard.Part of the idea behind sxs's and o/u's for clays, is that they can be built really sturdy to take the pounding of shot after shot , that some clay shooters need. Some of the guys i used to shoot with, fired over 700 rounds a week!!!One word of warning. Clay shooting can be very, very addictive!! The only known cure is to shoot more clay birds until your addiction is satisfied. So far, I don't think any of us are cured.

Except for casual shooters or shooters practicing with their hunting guns, side-by-sides are very rare on the trap field. You will certainly never see any at an ATA shoot! Consider an Over/Under perhaps?

That's right. The O/U is the popular choice and has been for a long , long time. We used to see more sxs's back in the 60's and early to mid 70's , more on the skeet range than for trap. Some of those guns were for upland hunting that fit the bill for skeet as well.As for $500.00, even a feild grade citori will run over $800.00,but you might find one if you look around.

Not sure about the Russian guns but, sxs tend to hinder the shooter somewhat in trap as they obscure the target coming out of the house and rising. Trap shooters use every opportunity to see the bird as early as possible, most shooters shoot with both eyes open, again to get a quicker/better look at the bird. A SxS would tend to negate those advantages.......and this is from me, i prefer SxS guns for the field and other clay target games.

You're right. The sxs's do tend to hinder your sight plane to the target and the O/U's ofcourse are the same as sighting a single barrel.I love my sxs's, but i have to admit, even for hunting, the sight plane changes with a sxs.The russian guns are what they are. For the money they're actually quite good IMHO.For a purist definately not. I'm waiting to win the lottery so i can order my Purdey. Yea right , dream on!!!

I regulary use a SxS for clays games but I'm not trying to win the Nationals - just out having fun!

If anyone is interested in a SxS for clays I've got a Merkel for sale - that gun will never shoot loose and is as beautiful as they come.

I was in the same boat... I wanted to try it out... and didn't want to spend a grand on an O/U in the off chance I didn't like it...

I bought a SxS Baikal from Tradex... it got me interested... and I still enjoy shooting it (I'm still very much a beginner)... It's a very solid gun... the full/mod chokes were a bit tight, so I had a gunsmith open them up to skeet/IC and my scores went up!!

If you're looking for something to start with and you don't have a ton of cash... I'd say go for it... that's what I did...

For the price of most new guns, you can buy both a SXS and an O/U from Trdeex. Unless you are planning on removeable chokes, Trap and Skeet require different patterns, Skeet is shot with the widest pattern possible while Trap is shot with something just a wee tiny bit tighter (I exaggerate a bit now and then)

Got a $250 SxS from Trade Ex about a month or so ago and I love it! I wanted a SxS to try out and it fit the bill. No perfect scores on the trap range but not bad either (nothing under 20 yet). It's stiff and pain in appearance but it appears to be built like the T-34 that was melted down to produce it. If you just want a taste, it'll work fine for you. If you find you don't like it, you can sell it for damn near what you paid for it.
