SxS shotgun - How do I disable ejectors?

Picked up a nice Ithaca/SKB 200E side by side. Figure to use it for some upland work and as my back up cowboy shotgun. Is there a "best way" to convert the ejectors to plain extractors?

I looked at removing the springs but wondered if there are better alternatives.

Just Curious as to why you want the springs removed? Been gettin hit in the face with the empties or something? :)

Cowboy Action Shooting rules do not allow for ejectors. Guns used are to be as was available before 1900 or there about. Ejectors would be a competitive advantage.

I think you're asking a question like, "How can I use my Cadillac as a backup firewood hauler?"

That 200E is a fine gun. Don't disable it for CAS, but just find another cheap gun, IMHO, as a CAS backup gun. Baikal, Savage, Boito, Norinco, etc., there's lots out there.

I used a 200E for years and didn't like the ejectors either. I just used to put my hand over the chamber to keep them from flying.

Nice shotguns they are. Mine was a 25" 20ga with IC/M chokes. I traded it for a "like new" Browning Citori. Bad move on my behalf. :(

I don't plan on shooting it much for Cowboy Action as I have a cut down Browning BSS (No I didn't cut it down!) but I personally have no use for ejectors. Why would I want to chase hulls all over the woods or the skeet range? Yes you can put your hand over it every time but why should you have to? Only time ejectors would be handy is repelling attaking Huns or standing in the flight path of 10,000 doves in South America, neither of which is likely to happen any time soon.

I don't plan on altering anything permanently just prefer extractors to ejectors.

Maybe you should raise the point that Joseph Needham's patent 1205 of 1874 is for the first pivot open ejector sporting (shot)gun. I notice Greener used patent number 2003 of 1881, also for ejectors.
Suggest rule makers have a browse through Crudginton and Baker volume 2.

Just put weaker springs in it. That way it dosen't fling the hulls out. You can buy Bag O Springs at Canadian Tire or automotive stores, Princess Auto. You just have to play around a bit to find the write ones.

Dave,

Excellent suggestion and that's what I did with the BSS, unfortunately it won't work with the Ithaca 'cause they are leaf springs and I don't want to mess with filing them or trying to bend them to make them weaker. One shooter suggest shortening the lifters/ejectors themselves but I am not fond of that option either.....
