Is anyone using a synthetic motor oil as a general gun oil. I've heard of some people using Mobil1 as gun oil. I am just curious as to what viscosity is being used? Is it better to use a thicker oil that clings to parts or a thinner oil that flows better ? I can see pros and cons for both. Is anyone using Royal Purple oil or any other brand ?

For better or worse I use 50/50 acetone and ATF as a cleaner and straight ATF to lubricate / final wipe down. Recoil lugs and cocking cams get a dab of white lithium grease.

Lucas is now selling a gun oil but in general i find engine oil to heavy a grade to use. I have dabbed oil off my eng dipstick on a gun to keep it running in the field but my thought is a 10w or a light hyd oil like aw15 would be ok in hot conditions in a pinch. I find gun oil lighter than 10w and as i have yet to find a stright 5w oil i will stick to gun oil for now. At some of the low temps we get here i have thought of using diesel fuel but have yet to try it. Anyway my 2 pennies.

My son and I were playing with different oils, just to see which ones made bolt actions feel slickest. We would try one, wipe it off and try another one. In the end the best was 0-40 synthetic that happened to come out of an Arctic Cat jug. Filled a bottle with it and have been using it ever since. It probably wouldn't make a dimes worth of difference what synthetic it was, but I've always got that handy.

I use whatever is left in the bottles after doing and oil change on my truck. My pistols, rifles or shotguns never seem to notice the difference and neighter did I. Never understand the appeal of "gun oil" at the prices they charge for a shot glass sized bottle. The cleaning stuff like g96 is nice because it don't stink up the house but I can't get behind gun oil.

G96 to clean, mobile 1 5 w20 full synthetic cause that's what my car takes not one issue as of yet. Don't understand why people go out and buy gun oil way to overpriced.

Next time your wife or GF drags you into Bed Bath and Beyond or some similar box store, look for the Travel Sized plastic squeeze bottles. I give them out at my CQB clinics. Then like many of you said, drain whatever oil jug or container into the squeeze bottle and PAY IT FORWARD to newbies at the gun club.

Good KARMA also....what’s not to like?

ANY oil is better than NO oil....

Cheers, Barney

Engine oil stinks a bit too much for my liking. Air tool oil is pretty good, compressor oil is too, pretty much odorless.
