Synthetic Stocks on No1 Mk III Lee-Enfield

Hi guys.

1943 No1 Mk III Sporterized.

My dad got his gun free a long time ago, we have shot it a bit too. I am looking at an entry level bolt gun for practice.

What I want to do is put one of those ATI Synthetic stocks on it as the original wood is way too thick in the wrist and the LOP is too short for me.

Are these stocks worth the $70?

And is it worth buying the Scope mount and mounting a scope on top or should I focus on learning the Iron Sights first?

You know, the SMLE was made with FOUR different lengths of butt: Bantam (marked B), Short (marked S), Normal (generally unmarked) and Long (marked L). As well, a Number 4 butt can be modified to fit a Number 1 (which is what you have) and they came also in Extra-Long (marked XL) and even Extra-Extra-Long (marked XXL and suitable for Orangutans and others with very long arms).

Instal the butt length which you need, glass-bed the action properly, clean the rifle thoroughly, tune the trigger if it needs it..... and you have a FINE rifle and you still haven't spent 70 bucks: butt is worth 20 bucks, Acra-Glas kit $30, so you have $20 left over for a box of ammo.

Not that I'm really against synthetics (I hate the things, if truth be told) but, even if you instal a synthetic, it will still have to be bedded to fit it to YOUR rifle's action.

Ya, my stock was marked B for bantam. My nose hits my thumb when I shoulder it.

What does the Acra-Glas entail? I am more of a shotgun guy and have never bedded a rifle before.

I did it last year witn my Enfield .303. That, and invested in new scope mounts ( installed by a gunsmith), a scope, and use quality ammo. It all makes a huge difference. I now have total confinence in that rifle which cost me 90.00 in 1991 or so. This year, deer better look out ! Do it...
