Has anyone on here ever heard of a black powder rifle builder named T.R. Girodat, from Kitchener Ontario?

Is the pictured rifle a Hawken or a Lehigh style?

It has a hooked breech, with 3 wedges that remove easily and then the barrel lifts out.

.58 calibre I believe.

Made in 1971.

ps Aside from making guns, he was a DCRA shooter.

I am pretty sure that he was a serious collector of single shot rifles. A couple of his 1885's are pictured in Campbell's books on the Winchester Single Shot. I bought them from Elwood Epps a few years ago.

Chris.

Ted Girodat passed away about 6 years ago. He was a serious collector of many types of guns including single shot rifles and English double shotguns to mention only a few. His estate liqidated much of his collection of several hundred guns through Elwood Epps. He was also a builder of some very fine BP guns - he was a meticulous craftsman - about 10 years ago he showed me a very fine Kentucky longrifle he had built. He used only top quality parts, including barrels by Bill Large and locks by top custom builders like Ron Long and Bob Roller.

You have purchased a very fine piece of work ...check the barrel to see if it was made by W.M. Large and any name you can find on the inside of the lock plate.

Capture as much provenance information as you can. The old timers' work will be more valuable as the days go on. Look at carved wood duck decoys.

The lock is marked H.W. Robbins on the inside.

This rifle was made by Ted Girodat in 1971 for the seller.

It's a round ball barrel in .58. He said the barrel was made by Numrich and Ted cut off a piece as needed and threaded it for the breech plug.

This is one heavy rifle...
