hey fellas whilst Ivebeen hunting a few mornings this week in dull light an foggy conditions I really noticed the stainless barrel stood out like dogs balls.
mind you its the first stainless deer hunting rifle ive owned.

I heard off the previous owner the camo tape he used caused surface rust beginning to form, so I figured I would grab the black spray can from the shed an give it a bit of a touch up.

its rough, but the rifle is a knock about hunting rifle and I think with a coat of matte an maybe some taping here or there I could get it looking 'nice' but for now half barrel black model to test it durability over the next few weeks.

I plan on doing something bright on the stock just to see how it goes aswell.

only concern would be what kind of spray paint it is and if it's heat resistant.

the constant heating / cooling of the barrel could cause it to crack and flake off eventually... unless you used BBQ paint or something, heh.

I think the same thing about my savage stainless, it's really shiny!

I always thought the Tikka matte stainless didn't show much glare if any at all.....Maybe they are a bit different from gun to gun

Savage stainless shine like no tomorrow!! I can see my buddy's gun flashing as he's walking across a field even 200-300 yards away when the light is just right......summer and winter

Question.
You said the previous owner thought the tape caused rust...I thought stainless steels upside was rust & corrosion resistant to a high degree?
Not that there is anything wrong with painting it of course.

Nah ive seen Browning Abolt stainless finish pitt up from now much TLC an living in a gun bag, same gist would be sweating under the tape aswell as moisture sticking under aswell?!

I think ill need to rough the surface up a bit more to allow the paint to get a grip as I noticed 2 slight nicks in the paint already :)

Certainly cut the Glare out im happy with the result. just need to work on the finish.

Cerekote is a cost im not prepared to pay for, il save my Dollars for more ammo :) it would be the way togo if it were a severe issue you needed to deal with an budget was open.

cheers

I dont think the barrel will get hot enough to blister tremclad.

So many people have brought this up, after their initial question I question them on it... "Whys that?" .my gun barely has time to 'warm up'. if I miss 3 times I quit, an even for finishing a critter I believe it would need 10+ shots to get it hot enough to blister paint IMO.

Get it powder coated and its good go.

Powder coating is blow-ass. Just imagine the fun of getting that crap off of metal without gouging the sh*t out of it. More projects have been F'd up using that crap from auto frames to gun parts & besides, it builds up oversized tolerances on parts, meaning you have to re-bore any hole the junk gets into, or re-surface any close fitting flat surfaces that the junk gets onto.

Also, if you get a chip in powder coat, moisture will creep in and rust the underlying metal. Don't use it....it's sh*t.:(
